This album has recieved mixed reviews from many people in the past but I made up my mind pretty quick. It is not as bad as most people think. Although the album is much more Hard Rock than Thrash Metal it is still an important Metallica album.

Lyrically I think that this album is really a step back for the Metalliboys. They started getting introspective and so started singing about cars which isn't what we've come to expect from them.
Musically this album is much more advanced than previous. Both guitarist tackle completely different parts (rather than just mirroring each other) which gives the album and extra level and makes it sound new even after a few listens.
This should not be your first Metallica album, nor should it be your last. This has signalled the start of a new Metallica and an end to the old regime of fast and hard.
Advantages: Hmmm...If you like grunge, country or pop punk, there may be one or two good songs on it. Disadvantages: Ermm...how long have you got? Turgid, MTV friendly pop rubbish.
This album was a big departure for Metallica to say the least - a departure from being as heavy as hell, one of the best metal bands in the world, to the turgid waters of commercial acceptance. I expect this review to come in for a lot of flak, so I will start by answering some expected criticisms:
a) No, I don’t expect a band to constantly churn out the same album. You can develop musically without becoming a commercial pop rock act though.
... ...is rubbish because Metallica cut their hair. I really couldn’t care less about the length of people’s hair. After all, look at Bruce Dickinson.
c) I am not some "old school" metalhead to expects every band to sound like every other eighties band - but I do expect heavy metal bands who were once so vocal about it to stick to their guns and make heavy metal music.
The very least Metallica could have done here was change their name (possibly ...

Advantages: IT ROCKS!!!! Disadvantages: soem lamer tunes, but nothing TOO bad
Having read some other peoples opinions I find it hard to believe that they do not enjoy such a great album. Being a bit of a Metallica fan it was only time until I reviewed another one of their cd's, so here goes, this review will be 100 times better then my rubbish black album review!
I found this cd to be a mix of heavy songs and softer ones, a nice mix songs, some not so good, but some awesome ones. I'll go through them song by song, well I'll ... ...A nice n heavy one with great rythem and flowing lyrics (in my op :)). Very cool indeed, play it nice and loud, heh. 9/10
2X4. Cool intro, sounds like a classicy sort of rock song in my opinion. Doesn't flow quite as well as the first song, with some corny lyrics (but the sound cool some times, but I hate the crappy sounding "retrobution" bit). It's enjoyable though, I like it. 7/10
The House That jack Built. A softer one, but an utter corker of ...

(Please excuse me for my bad English). Some fans of Metallica think, all the Albums after "Black Album" are not good, because Metallica changed its style after the break of five years. Ok, this is right, but the music got better than it ever was, as I think. But well, "Garage, Inc." and "S&M" were nothing more than making money. On "Garage, Inc.", there were only old tracks and tracks, Metallica didn't write theirself and on "S&M", there were only ... ...both of them was not too bad. Before "Garage, Inc." there was "Reload", an Album, I personally don't like so much.. But when I bought the album "Load" about for years ago, I liked it from the beginning. At this time, I didn't knew Metallica very much, but the Sound did more than convince me. So, I will write all the tracks on the album with a short comment and a judgement. The tracks marked with an "x" are tracks, I also recorded as a Mp3. It starts ...

Advantages: It's virtually all classic stuff Disadvantages: The first three minutes of Poor Twisted Me are pretty lousy :)
Load is my favourite Metallica album, it was also the first one I bought. Put simply, I simply love it. A lot of people slagged the band off for having their hair cut and going ‘alternative’ but you can’t expect a band that has been going for 15 years to always produce the same material. Unless maybe they’re AC/DC.
The album has something of everything, from out and out rock with Ain’t My ***** to country and western with Mama Said to the more laid ... ...along at full throttle.
Load is different to all their other albums, including ReLoad (Thankfully, even though ReLoad was supposed to be what would have gone on the second disc of Load had it been a double album as originally planed). But that doesn’t make it a bad album, sure, it’s slower than Master Of Puppets and yes, it doesn’t have all the heavy metal classics that reside on the ‘black’ album but no band should rest on it’s laurels because ...

Advantages: Classic Disadvantages: Not for the weak of Heart.
With the exception of one or two songs, metallica have consistently produced fantastic albums. How ever, with Load, it simply is thier best yet. I do not think that there is one song on it that i do not like. From the opening sone right through to the final song The outlaw torn, this album rocks.
King nothing, the fifth track has to be one of thier real classics. It starts off with Kirk Hammett playing a real simple riff that repeats for ages, yet ... ...long live Kirk.
What could I say about the next track, what must be one of my favorite tracks by Metallica of all time "Hero of the day" This is a song that starts off life as a nice balad, but then turns into a real rip roarer of a song. The album contines with other good songs untill it gets to "Thorne within" Again, this is one that will stand the test of time. If you like Metallica, then your love Load. ...

Advantages: It's new Metallica material Disadvantages: It's not that great
With Load being my favourite Metallica album, I was looking forward to see what ReLoad had to offer. Unfortunately in the main it seems to be mainly warmed up leftovers from the Load sessions. Not what would have gone on the second Load disc had they had time to make it a double album. But then the band also once catagorically stated that this album would not be called Re-Load or Reloaded or anything Load. Oh well. The first track, Fuel, is a good tune but I don?t really get the lyrics, they just seem to be randomly connected words. The Memory Remains is better though, a lot better. Marianne Faithful provides guest vocals, which adds a bit of variety to the standard Metallica sound, and the variety continues with Devil?s Dance. This track has Kirk seemingly using as many whammy pedals as possible to create a very interesting sound ...
Advantages: Some good tunes Disadvantages: Quite a few stinkers
Ok, I'm on a cd reviewing role, just done a review of Load, so now on to Reload... Once again it's a song by song break down, nice 'n simple.
Fuel. Real heavy, and a good start to the cd. Gets boring, but the chorus is DEAD nice. A good song overall, but I wish he wouldn't say "OHHHH YEAH YEAH", thats sounds rubbish! 8/10
The Memory Remains. Really damn good. Stupidly enjoyable tune, I love the lyrics and the heavy yet melodic tune. A corker of a song, and I havn't said "cool" yet... 10/10
Devil's Dance. hmmmmmm, a typical Metallica tune, good but not really that amazing. A bit dull too. 7/10
The Unforgiven ][. Right, you may remember on the black album there was unforgiven, well this is a heavier version, and it sounds better in my opinion. It's deeper amd louder. Great lyrics and tune. 10/10
Better Then You. No, this ...
Advantages: Good riffs and solos. at 1 hour 16 you get a lot for your money Disadvantages: A couple of disappointing tracks
Despite criticism from cynical Metallica fans I rate this as one of the best Metallica albums. The album is a departure from their heavier, more aggressive sound on albums like 'And Justice for All' but as an album in its own right it is still very good.
The best tracks are The Memory Remains, Carpe Diem Baby, Bad Seed and of course The Unforgiven II. The Unforgiven II is my personal favourite, combining good lyrics and a solo that is up there with their best. The only weak tracks are Low Man's Lyric and Where The Wild Things Are which lack the strong choruses of the better songs on this album.
In my opinion this album is the last chance to hear metallica at their best and still writing classic songs. ...
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Producers: Bob Rock, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich. Recorded at The Plant Studios, Sausalito, California between May 1995 and February 1996. The kings of speed metal have never been keen on being labeled, and LOAD, which follows up the 1991 mega-hit METALLICA, is a surprising pastiche of sonic fury. Metallica still rocks hard. James Hetfield's lyrics are still full of venom and anger, and the music still could scare small children. But the band is ready to show off other sides of its craft. "Hero Of The Day" sounds like an R.E.M. song, albeit a heavy one, with its tender beginning and ending confluence of harmonized vocals and catchy guitar riffs. A dose of the blues can be heard in the slow-burning "Bleeding Me," and a downright country twang pervades "Mama Said." Still, this is a metal album, and there are headbanging riffs o'plenty. LOAD may seem like a departure from the Metallica "norm," but it's actually what the band has been doing all along: writing well-crafted songs without a regard for what others think. The only difference is that the one-time denizens of the underground now have the world's rapt attention.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (7/11-25/96, p.85) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...with LOAD, the foursome dams the bombast and chugs half-speed ahead, settling into a wholly magnetizing groove that bridges old-school biker rock and the doomier side of post-grunge '90s rock..." New York Times (6/2/96, Sec.2, p.28) - "...On LOAD, Metallica has altered its music, learning new skills. Hetfield has committed himself to melodies, carrying tunes where he used to bark, and he no longer sounds sheepish when he sings quietly..." Musician (8/96, p.85) - "...The smoother, broader sound that distinguished...1991's METALLICA is even more apparent here, as is the tendency to write accessible tunes....the exploration of new sounds does nothing but good for the guitar duo of [James] Hetfield and Kirk Hammett..." Q (7/96, p.119) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...These boys set up their tents in the darkest place of all, in the naked horror of their own heads....Metallica make existential metal and they've never needed the props....Metallica are still awesome....What is new is streamlined attack, the focus and, yes, the tunes..." Melody Maker (6/8/96, p.49) - "...A Metallica album is traditionally an exhausting event. It should rock you to exhaustion, leave you brutalised and drained. This one is no exception. It is, however, the first Metallica album to make me wonder at any point, 'What the f*** was that?' It's as if the jackboot grinding the human face were to take occasional breaks for a pedicure..." NME (6/1/96, p.44) - 7 (out of 10) - "...like triumphant warriors returning into a world changed beyond all recognition...Metallica emphatically prove they are still unsurpassed in their self-created genre of stadium nihilism..." Entertainment Weekly (6/7/96, pp.56-57) - "...captures the band's earnest pursuit of its Sisyphean mission: to create hard rock that reaches grown-ups and basement-dwelling teens..." - Rating: B
