This album has recieved mixed reviews from many people in the past but I made up my mind pretty quick. It is not as bad as most people think. Although the album is much more Hard Rock than Thrash Metal it is still an important Metallica album.
Load is definitely not for the Metallica fan who also listens to a bit of Death Metal on the side. This is more for the fan who appreciates more Classic Metal ideas.
Lyrically I think that this album is really a step back for the Metalliboys. They started getting introspective and so started singing about cars which isn't what we've come to expect from them.
Musically this album is much more advanced than previous. Both guitarist tackle completely different parts (rather than just mirroring each other) which gives the album and extra level and makes it sound new even after a few listens.
This should not be your first Metallica album, nor should it be your last. This has signalled the start of a new Metallica and an end to the old regime of fast and hard.

I agree, people should stop moaning about "Oh my God, Metallica have changed!!", and realise that they are simply exploring different avenues of sound, and proving that they can adapt their talents to any kind of music. Good opinion.
