Load is my favourite Metallica album, it was also the first one I bought. Put simply, I simply love it. A lot of people slagged the band off for having their hair cut and going ‘alternative’ but you can’t expect a band that has been going for 15 years to always produce the same material. Unless maybe they’re AC/DC.
The album has something of everything, from out and out rock with Ain’t My ***** to country and western with Mama Said to the more laid back groove of tracks like Hero Of the Day. There’s also the epic The Outlaw Torn, which was actually too long to fit on the CD (The full length version is hidden away on a Re-Load B-Side and entitled “The unencumbered by manufacturing restrictions mix”). The song gradually gathers pace as it progresses and by the time it finishes it’s pelting along at full throttle.
Load is different to all their other albums, including ReLoad (Thankfully, even though ReLoad was supposed to be what would have gone on the second disc of Load had it been a double album as originally planed). But that doesn’t make it a bad album, sure, it’s slower than Master Of Puppets and yes, it doesn’t have all the heavy metal classics that reside on the ‘black’ album but no band should rest on it’s laurels because that would be boring for them and us. Regardless of whether you like metal, rock or indy – you will like this album, it’s a classic that deserves to be in any respectable CD collection.

Another Metalica album I borrowed, another Metallica album I hated! This one seems to drag on for ever. i doubt you would rate it so highly if you heard their first 5 albums before this one.

Advantages: Hmmm...If you like grunge, country or pop punk, there may be one or two good songs on it. Disadvantages: Ermm...how long have you got? Turgid, MTV friendly pop rubbish.
