Advantages: Lots of great songs from the eighties Disadvantages: A few not so great
I was in my local record store the other week browsing for ideas for mothers day for my wife from our two small children when my attention was caught by this particular offering. As most of you will be aware from my previous reviews, one of my great passions is eighties music and I couldn't resist buying this. Not for my wife I might add but for myself.
So what was it that caught my attention?
Well to be honest the graphics on the CD hardly grab your attention. Basically it consists of a dark blue cover with light blue lettering declaring that it is a Top of The Pops Album, with this letting enclosed to make it appear like a circle. The BBC logo is also detailed but this is hardly prominent either. In red lettering at the bottom of the circle the album stipulates the 80s, and provides details of a selection of artists in ...
Advantages: Extremely nostalgic and enjoyable for everyone Disadvantages: A couple of bad song choices, but not enough to detract from the enjoyment
night, which was a mistake as I had been to the bingo and won £47 and had, subsequently, got tanked up. I woke in the morning and couldn't remember any of it, apart from a few strained memories of Noddy Holder. We did, however, get full marks on the music section, and ultimately came 9th of a possible 15. This was a success as we were all born in the 80's, and each member of the winning team were so old that when they got up to collect their prize, their artificial hips all started clicking like a ticker-tape machine. I'm exaggerating slightly, although I'm not sure they'd have done as well on a quiz about the 'nought-ies'.
Anyway, back to the DVD - a celebration of the 40th anniversary of 'Top of the Pops', released in 2004. Featuring a live (and I use the word advisedly) performance from each of the past 40 years, it offers the viewer ...
Advantages: An updated blast from the past Disadvantages: Not everyones favorite Beatles tracks were covered
This album is not like the other Beatlestribute albums, but instead is in a class of its own. Featuring top musicians from the rock and metal genre this CD promised to be a screeching, howling head banging take on several Beatles classics. And the first track sticks to this promise. Alice cooper's vocals make 'Hey Bulldog' his own, accompanied on guitar by Steve Vai, this track is not only a catchy tune but prepares you for what is to come. Several tracks feature very unique vocal stylings from the likes of Motorheads Lemmy and Ex Judas Priest/Iced Earth singer Tim "Ripper" Owens.
I am a Beatles fan, and upon hearing that members of the metal and rock family were releasing this album I was excited, yet filled with a slight feeling of apprehension. Could The Beatles songs really be pulled off with screaming vocals and raging guitars ...
