Long Distance was the second Runrig album I ever got, and I was only about 8 when I got it...I've been raised on this sort of music! But, in all honesty, Long Distance is my favourite of Runrig. Some of their albums have songs which don't have that inspirational or enthusiastic feeling. Long Distance is, as it says, the best of Runrig, and so they've only included the best. Certainly a good album to listen to on long drives, or in the evenings. Relaxing celtic music, mostly in English too! The lyrics of the songs, especially those such as Protect and Survive, are really thought provoking and, unusually for a pop band, deep. Most of them are really catchy, and if you want something more traditional, there's always Loch Lomond! Cover etc. are pretty uninspiring but don't let that put you off. Not being a massively popular band outside of Scotland, you can always get their albums cheaply somewhere, and if you're only paying a few pounds, it's definitely a worthwhile album to buy. If not for the music, it's a talking point. I mean, most people will have the Beatles in their music collection, but how many have Runrig?
Quick run through: Glory Road- A gentle introduction, but not the best. Alba- Gaelic, but has a lovely soft tune. The Greatest Flame- Slow, seductive. Typical Runrig. Rocket to the Moon- Love it! A catchy one. Abhainn an T-sluiagh- Gaelic also, but nice- slow, calming. Protect and Survive- Sticks in your head, provocative. Rhythm of my Heart- Has this not been covered by...Rod Stewart? Hearthammer- Bit more upbeat. Not one of the top tunes. An Ubhal as Airde- Erm...well, it's ok. I don't understand a word as it's in Gaelic, but it's still not a favourite. Wonderful-As Hearthammer. Mara- wonderful! Relaxing, reminds you of home... Flower of the West- Another typical Runrig, but definitely worth a listen. Every River- Bit different, more of a pop-rock tune. Good! Siol Ghoraidh- Very Scottish but it's a good 'un. Hearts of Olden Glory- Beautiful, one to cry to. Skye- Makes you feel good! Worth listening to! Loch Lomond- Everyone knows this one... :)
Advantages: All of the songs are wriiten by the band, except 7 and 17 Disadvantages: None
I first got this when I was 17, and I wasn't to sure about it. But having decided to listen to the album, I was amazed! Runrig are a scottish folk/rock band who puts celtic, folk and rock together to create a unique sound. As the other reviewers, said about lyrics, it all depends how you look at it. I wasn't to sure on Rocket To The Moon, but listening to the whole album, it kinda makes you feel there's a spiritual presence from deep within your ... ...but I do love them still even if it's not the original lead singer. The singing stands out from Donnie Munro but also from Rory Macdonald who has brilliant harmonies
Pros : All of the songs except 7 and 17 are written by the band. How can people say it's not originality is beyond me as 99% of Runrig songs are wriiten by Calum/Rory Macdonald. They been going over 35 years
Cons None ...

Advantages: No bad tracks you just want to skip Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste
The album kicks off with the uplifting and a personal favourite of mine - Glory Road - and the standard is set for the rest of the CD. With strong instrumentals, soulful lyrics and a brilliant voice this is quite simply Runrig at its best. The live tracks are great - I love hearing people singing along to the chorus, especially Loch Lomond. The majority of the tracks are upbeat and easy on the ear; making it good to drive to. Before you know it you're ... ...is an acquired taste - it's a soft mix of rock and pop, soulful with a good drum beat to it. It isn't similar to anything I've come across in recent years and is always makes a refreshing change when I'm in the mood for something different.
With classics such as The Greatest Flame and Hearthammer this this CD makes a great addition to any collection. Tracks -
