When recording this album, Rainbow consisted of Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Cozy Powell on drums, Bob Daisley on bass and David Stone on Keyboards.
Sound-wise ... ...– Deep Purple. On the one side, this is sad, because one has to do without the Purple – typical ‘duels’ between Hammond Organ and guitar. On the other side: this is Rainbow, and Rainbow has almost nothing to do with Deep Purple: Blackmore’s range is big enough to really go nuts on guitar. 1978 is the year: “Long live Rock’n’Roll”, one of the best Hard Rock albums ever, is being released. ‘Rainbow’, always ruled by Ritchie Blackmore’s iron fist, has reached it’s creative climax.
When recording this album, Rainbow consisted of Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Ronnie James Dio on vocals, Cozy Powell on drums, Bob Daisley on bass and David Stone on Keyboards.
Sound-wise there is no further connection between Rainbow and the ‘Mother-Group’ – Deep Purple. Rainbow can best be classified as ‘Classic British Hardrock’. “Long Live Rock’n’Roll” has been produced by Martin Birch, who produced all Hard’n’Heavy-Top-Acts from Deep Purple to Iron Maiden.
“Long Live Rock’n’Roll” features 8 songs. Yet the title song includes the dogma of all Rockers, Metalheads, whatever. Fast riffing and memorable hooklines are characteristic for this and all other songs. If rapid as “Long Live Rock’n’Roll”, if melodic as “Lady Of The Lake”, or if stomping as “L.A. Connection”: Rainbow manage to deliver one top song after another. “Kill The King” is a climax between other climaxes, a kind of prototype for a (classic) Hard Rock song. Only “Rainbow Eyes” doesn’t fit this scheme. The song is the obligatory ballad, a song influenced by medieval music, only relying on quiet guitar, Dios vocals and flute and violin in the background.
My conclusion is: no Hard’n’Heavy – collection must have a gap, where Rainbow’s “Long Live Rock’n’Roll” should be found. It is simply a piece of great and essential Hard Rock.
Advantages: Quality, Power Disadvantages: Some weak tracks
...in the later years.
Long Live Rock and Roll is RAINBOW at the peak of their creativity - just as maybe MACHINE HEAD was for Deep Purple.
Whilst the 1970's seemed to get bogged down with overly long progressive rock epics, and before the NWOBHM took a real hold - a bridge between the two was needed, and this album was it.
Taking the 70's guitar feel of classic Purple, adding a touch a classic/progressive rock influence, and bundled into one neat ... ...Dio/Black Sabbath classic HEAVEN AND HELL, as well as the best of the IRON MAIDEN albums)
The title track is classic Blackmore/Purple - catchy riffs, and a hooking chorus - albeit with the mega powerful vocal style of Ronnie James Dio.
The progressive influence shows through a little with LADY OF THE LAKE, and then completely, with the awesome GATES OF BABYLON.
Some intense riffing and wonderful vocal ability give these tracks awesome power, but ...

Album Notes
Rainbow includes: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Cozy Powell (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Released in 1978, LONG LIVE was the final Ronnie James Dio-fronted release by Rainbow. Dio would go on to front Black Sabbath, while guitarist Richie Blackmore would reunite with Deep Purple. The album caps off a string of tremendous releases from one of the strongest branches on the heavy-metal family tree. The title track is a fan favorite and one of the strongest tunes from this era--a heavy rock tune written for arenas. "Lady of the Lake" is a solid number featuring haunting background vocals. "L.A. Connection" features the piano tinglings of keyboardist David Stone. "Gates of Babylon" is a mammoth track featuring the Bavarian String Ensemble, as synthesizer and strings combine for a symphonic big-rock sound. Another standout is "Kill the King," a speedy, full force tune with Mr. Blackmore doing what he does best. Blackmore opens the thunderous "The Shed (Subtle)" with a fluid, effects-laden bluesy solo. "Rainbow Eyes" is a seven-minute epic that features a string quartet, flute, and Dio's euphonic balladry. LONG LIVE, while not the masterwork that is RAINBOW RISING, is a strong album that ends the Dio era on a high note.
