I have always been, and probably will always be, an Eagles fan. Yet still, I keep being impressed by this band. Initially, like many I assume, I was nervous about listening to this album in case it didn't live up to the very high reputation the Eagles built for themselves.
Straight from holding the CD box though, there was something reassuring about it. It's a double album- that's a lot of Eagles songs but might that mean that many haven't been given proper work? But the Eagles thankfully are perfectionists.
The first track, No More Walks in the Wood is a poem, and contains little backing from instruments and instead allows the voices of all 4 members to harmonise so well to describe the once luscious forest now torn down. It's style and it's politcal message is not what you're expecting. But it settles you, and prepares you for its more lively second track, How Long. How Long has become my favourite song over the past year. It was written with JD Souther (yes, Eagles fans- get excited) and reminds you that the Eagles have such a perfected style of laid-back suave that you just don't find anywhere else. I'd honestly wake up to this song everyday for the rest of my life. These are just the first two songs- but the album follows on in the traditional veteran high-quality style that is becoming more and more infrequent nowadays. The Long Road Out Of Eden is definatley a song worth looking out for. The thinking behind it sounds like the thinking between Hotel California, and it's very powerful to listen to. Personally I'm not a fan of Hole In The World, Last Good Time in Town or Fast Company. This is not because they are bad songs however. They are unlucky enough to be good songs on an excellent album.
I would strongly recommend this album to anyone, especially Eagles fans and those who're tired of the current maintstream convention. It would also make a great gift for someone expanding their music collection.
