the best part of 30 years--ignoring the piecemeal (and some might say mean-spirited) sprinkle of new songs on 1994'sHell Freezes Over--that doesn't crave every last minute of this epic stack of original work. But then there also hasn't been a double album in history that couldn't have been improved by shedding at least some of its load and tucking its jeans into its cowboy boots.Long Road out of Edenis no exception to that rule. Much of the first disc passes by in a shuffle of fairly standard, although admittedly enjoyable, mid-beat country-rock (see especially "Busy Being Fabulous") and the appearance of a drum machine on the second hints at a frankly unnecessary dalliance with 80s MOR pop--and one they'd already avoided by splitting the first time around. It's music made by professionals, but lacking the classic, cinematic poise that has made Hotel California a mainstay on the best albums of all-time lists. But then the ambitious reach of the wind-swept, politically charged 10-minute title track really pulls things back, while the pleasant calypso drift of "It's Your World Now", near a cappella melody waterfall of "No More Walks in the Wood" and moody blues swagger of "Somebody" prove there's still just enough wind beneath these wings.--James Berry

Advantages: Some great tracks Disadvantages: Be a '49er - pan gold from the sludge
...as well as 'Desperado', 'The Long Run' and 'Takin' It Easy' amongst other. The Eagles took what they said was a 14 year vacation (from each other, as well) and have toured since they reformed in the 1990's.
It is 28 years since their last studio album and now one has been released (actually two this is a double album).
(On a side note, why is the album cover all sepia tones of brown like some 1973 throwback? And why on earth is it only a cardboard ... ...track. Ah-ha-ha-aa
- How Long - Suddenly the tempo is up and its time to 'put on yer dancin' shoes' or something. This track does put you in mind of people in jeans and pointed collar shirts and cowboys boots and hats strutting their stuff, unfortunately the people concerned are from Rotherham and the place is not a barn in the Napa Valley, it is the Rotherham Leisure Centre and it is 'Keep Fit the Line Dancing Way' with Cowboy Norman. All right, ...

Album Notes: Six years in production, 'Long Road Out Of Eden' is the seventh studio album from country rock mainstays The Eagles. Recording began a full 22 years after the release of their previous opus with a tweaked line-up (following Don Felder's dismissal in 2001) and some instrumental augmentations. Lead single 'How Long' adheres to the musical templates the band is known for, but album tracks such as the ten-minute epic title track showcase the wider scope of earlier successes such as 'Hotel California'. Eagerly anticipated by their ageing fanbase, 'Long Road Out Of Eden' is a worthy continuation of the Eagles story.
