Advantages: A return to the 70's, written from the heart, brilliantly produced Disadvantages: Not a commercial success
...It really couldn't be much better than this.
As a sound recording, or as a live performance the music contained on this album really is extraordinary. Gone are monotonous performances from dreary fake rockers, The Darkness have (with this album even more than their first one) brought back the 1970's. They are a band who really didn't care that this didn't sell brilliantly, along with the singles on it, they were far more bothered that people had a great time when listening to their music. This may sound very naive, however it really is true - I have never known a band to appear so devoted and happy with unsuccussful work than the Darkness do here. This is an album from the heart, and all of the songs are very deep and considered - all of them are easily single-quality. Space fillers? No, there really are none.
And the production...

Advantages: The Very Best Of The Big O Disadvantages: I had to review 41 Songs... phew
...with him, it may sound like a platitude but Bono had written "She's a mystery to Me" especially for Roy just so he could hear the great Man sing his words, so I think he meant it. And I reckon he was right too. You don't hear too many covers of Roy's songs and it's probably down to the fact that it would be foolish to have your version compared to his, you know you're not going to come off best.
This collection of 41 songs has pretty much all the real classics of Roy's career, and a few little treasures that even some fans may not have heard or have long forgotten. I'll do my best to comment on all the songs

Advantages: Tremendous from a musical point of view Disadvantages: Disappointing selection of tracks and dull presentation
..."California Man" was first issued in 1974 as a compilation of The Move's last three A-sides, some of the B-sides, and several tracks from their last Harvest album "Message from The Country", after Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan had gone their separate ways to form Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard, and also left the EMI/Harvest label. At the time it was welcome as the only way to acquire the tracks once the singles had been deleted. But as a reissue on CD to celebrate Harvest Records' 30th anniversary, it is plainly inadequate. Any self-respecting 70s fan will need no reassurance that the music is terrific. After all, the title track was one of the finest UK rock'n'roll singles ever bar none, "Tonight" was a gem of a song with crisply-strummed acoustic guitars and a solo that out-Harrisoned Beatle George at his best, "Ella...
