Lost Souls… The Doves finest, as is often the case with debut albums - this is a classic and probably my favourite album of all time. A chilled out listen with great lyrics and amazing vocals from Jimi Goodwin.
It's an album that transcends a specific period in ones life, rising above musical genres, impervious to clichés. I'm talking specifically about Britpop culture and the 'Madchester' scene to which Doves (or sub-sub as they were formally known) were born, formed in the wake of an acid house craze that swept through their hometown of Manchester, leading to a chance encounter between old school friend Jimi Goodwin and brothers, Jez and Andy Williams where else but the Hacienda club… cue: a band was born.
Standout tracks include: Here it comes, Lost souls, Catch the sun and Cedar room. From start to finish a gloriously dark masterpiece you are sure to be swept away and lose yourself in a musical flight of the imagination.
Doves have made a modern masterpiece of wall of sound guitars, depth charged production, and great songs undoubtedly achieved through their earlier dance pedigree, which both helps and hinders their modern rock symphonies. Some may call it self indulgent and perhaps this is true of later works but the threesome manage to flex guitar muscle riding their way through the surf of Nineties 'style over substance' tosh to emerge the other side of Y2K with bucket loads of credibility and following the recent come-back success of analogous band Elbow expect more albums to come. I'm sure.

Advantages: An album that gets better the more often you hear it. And you should hear it a lot. Disadvantages: The band your mum would probably like - which is never fun

Review of Lost Souls - Doves
Advantages: A comprehensive collection of b-sides from the first two albums. Disadvantages: I love Doves, but this is one for the fans and completists.
