recording of Louis Armstrong's later career, with the great trumpeter-singer turning to material that was very close to his roots. Both W.C. Handy and Armstrong had a complex relationship with the blues, an essential source for both Handy's popular songs and Armstrong's improvisational art, and these recordings touch on the heart of the matter. On "Yellow Dog Blues," a product of Handy's own early and chance encounter with the rural blues, there's a majesty that recalls Armstrong's early recordings with Bessie Smith. Armstrong is clearly inspired by the classic material and the chance to stretch out on record, and his regular band of the period joins in perfectly. Trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, and singer Velma Middleton contribute stellar solos and support, while bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer Barrett Deems do an exceptional job of keeping the slower tempos rock steady. This isa deeply moving and consummately executed performance.--Stuart Broomer

I love reggae music, especially Bob Marley, but if I am honest I also like a bit of Jazz, not any old Jazz though, when I say Jazz I mean LouisArmstrong.
LouisArmstrong a Jazz musician that will not be forgotten and an act that will never be followed, some Jazz musicians will try and follow in his footsteps but non will succeed, Louis was unique.
Who else could have that rough, gravel like voice that could become so famous, that famous smile and the twinkle in his eyes?
LouisArmstrong (satchmo) the name he was well known as.
Louis was born into a poor family from New Orleans on August 4th 1901.
Sent away to a reform school for two years that?s when and where he first learned to play the coronet.
After leaving reform school Louis was hired locally as a general dogsbody, but the music was in his bones and he frequently ...

Advantages: Amazing contrast of voices, Disadvantages: Some sonic quality is lost due to the age of the recording
This CD is a brilliant stepping-stone into the Jazz world. The instantly recognisable voice of LouisArmstrong is familiarly heart warming, Louis stood next to the sensational Ella, make a fine pair. The strong vocals are supported by the excellent band, with great instrumental links keeping the listener on the edge of their seat.
The intensity and coarseness of Mr. Armstrong's voice compels the audience to wish for the next scat solo or the next parade of incredible human talent that is Louis. Of course the same can be said of the sassy Ms. Fitzgerald who can sustain these high levels of aptitude.
I recommend this CD to any budding music fan who wishes to broaden their Musical horizons! HAPPY LISTENING!

Advantages: Magnificent skyline. Lots to do and see. Wonderful music heritage. Disadvantages: A number of attractions not wheelchair accessible
or The Gateway to the West as it is seen as the dividing mark of East and West America. The Gateway Arch, St Louis? most known landmark, commemorates that very idea.
~~Music~~
Anyone who has read any of my previous reviews of the USA will know that our trip was music based. St Louis has a long-standing music heritage.
The seven month long 1904 St Louis World Fair brought ragtime into the forefront of world music. Classic such as ?Meet me in St Louis, Louis? and Joplin?s ?The Entertainer? were composed especially for the fair. Scott Joplin lived and composed in a house in Delmar Boulevard, St Louis from 1901 ? 6. The house is now open as a museum to Joplin - more of this in a separate review. Well worth a visit ? plan for about 1 hour.
Today, St Louis is renowned for its Blues Music with live music played daily in various restaurants and clubs ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Velma Middleton (vocals); Trummy Young (trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Billy Kyle (piano); Arvell Shaw (bass); Barrett Deems (drums). Compilation producer: George Avakian. Recorded from July 12-14, 1954 and October 19, 1956. Includes liner notes by George Avakian. This wonderful and historically monumental recording pairs the master of jazz trumpet and jazz singing with "the father of the blues." In the early years of the 20th century, composer W.C. Handy authored many blues numbers, some of which have gone on not only to become enduring standards in the genre, but also to influence a vast repertoire of popular music. Armstrong, who achieved some of his earliest successes with treatments of Handy favorites, is in superior form on this recording. Perhaps due to Handy's presence at the sessions (the booklet is full of wonderful photos of the two), Satch seems even more focused and full of enthusiasm than usual. With excellent support from a band that includes Trummy Young (trombone), Barney Bigard (clarinet), and Velma Middleton (vocals), Armstrong and Co. interpret such Handy favorites as "The Memphis Blues," "Beale Street Blues," and the immortal "St. Louis Blues." The CD appends five previously unreleased tracks and an interview with Handy, making this set immeasurably worthwhile, in terms of both historic importance and entertainment value.
Album Reviews
JazzTimes (8/97, p.79) - "...there are three previously unissued rehearsal sequences, his interview with Handy, and Armstrong telling his famous alligator joke. What makes this a genuine classic is the playing and singing of the leader, who clearly had a great affection for Handy's compositions..."
