First of all let me quickly explain how a macho male (not really) like myself gets hold of a copy of the Love Actually OST, and claims to hold any kind of credibility. Well I bought it for my girlfriend you see, for her birthday, but she had already been given it by her brother. So I kept hold of it, because I'd lost the receipt. I was desperate to change it, as it couldn't adorn my CD collection, but because nobody wanted to swap, I was forced to keep it. It now lies hidden at the bottom of the stack, its cover removed (does anyone still believe me?). The CD however is still in my stereo system...
I admit it. I actually quite like this CD. Well, I like half of it. The first half is composed mainly of popular music featured in the film, or relating to the films romantic mood. The second half is a rather eclectic bunch of movie music, old time hits and lesser known hits by bigger stars.
But lets take it from the top.... fasten your seatbelt and hold on tight for a MALE view on the Love Actually OST. Oh dear oh dear....
1 - Girls Aloud - Jump. Besides liking the girls (obviously) this is a fantastic reworking of the original song which was featured in the film. It's upbeat, slightly disco'ey, and just a fantastic pop record. Top job girls!
2 - Sugababes - Too lost in you. I actually like the sugababes music too. This hit is pretty good, and is consistent with their recent previous efforts. It sounds a bit like Stronger anyway. I like it a lot.
3 - Kelly Clarkson - The trouble with love is. A ballad by the American Idol winner. We might not be super familiar with her, but she hasn't got a bad voice. Not a great fan of the song though... its a bit too 'squishy' for my liking.
4 - Dido - Here with me. A classic from her debut album, this is possibly my favourite Dido song. For me this is the best track on the album. Go girl :)
5 - Billy Mack - Christmas is all around Yep, if you've heard this, you'll know its a cheesy reworking of the old wet wet wet classic "love is all around" (You remember what film that featured in?). Yes its cheesy, but I found it pretty entertaining. A worthy addition.
6 - Norah Jones - Turn me on If I'm in the right mood I quite like Norah's music. This is an above average song for her. Very smooth, very sincere, and very..err...romantic
7 - Eva Cassidy - Songbird Similiar song to Norah I suppose, this is the title track to her super-selling album. A cracking ballad and my girlfriend keeps playing it. I sadly don't like it that much, or I've just heard it too often. Who knows. Great track, even if I dislike it.
8 - Maroon 5 - Sweetest goodbye I had never ever heard of this, but its actually a really good song. Difficult to describe however. A sort of slow funk pop ballad mix.
9 - The Calling - Wherever you will go Again, a slightly older offering from popular culture. A huge soft-rock hit though. I like it lots.
10 - Texas - I'll see it through I'll try and leave my personal dislike of Texas aside, and just say that this is their current single, and they tell me its quite good.
11 - Joni Mitchell - Both sides now 12 - Otis Redding - White Chrismas 13 - Sharissa - Take me as I am 14 - Olivio Olsen - All I want for Christmas 15 - The Beach Boys - God only knows 16 - Lynden David Hall - All you need is love 17 - Gabrielle - Sometimes
A collection of old hits, some redone by modern artists. Most of the songs are good enough, but I personally found the Lynden David Hall reworking of that classic Beatles track, a pain to hear. Sorry LDH fans. While the songs are good, they aren't exactly 'thrilling' listening.
18 - Glasgow love theme 19 - PM's love theme 20 - Portugese love theme All by Craig Armstrong.
Besides, Zimmer music scores, I really dont like movie music. I didn't like any of these.
So that was a brief review of the CD. There isn't all that much else to say, except to strongly recommend this CD to all fans of the film, and to those who like lighter pop music with a few extra's thrown in. RnB, nuMetal and Jazz fans stay away!
I'm ashamed. But I like this album. Would anyone like to buy the inlays though?

Advantages: Great Variety ot songs from ones like Jump ( for my love) covered by GIrls Aloud to jump around to, to Norah Jones' Turn me on when you want to chill out! Disadvantages: A few Christmas songs on its so it means using the remote to flick through!
