Even the Prime Minister danced to this (according to the recent film that is). You will dance too. (although we’ll never know if your moves are as entertaining to watch as Hugh Grants!) This is a fantastic album with upbeat songs, slow songs, happy and sad songs, and three orchestral themes at the end.
It features so many top artists: Dido, Sugarbabes, Texas, The Calling, Joni Mitchell, Mariah Carey. For those of you who saw the film, featuring many famous actors- Hugh Grant and Colin Firth among them, who saw the moving potential of the eternal love story, buy this album and relive it through the music that was the back drop to an excellent film.
Some of the tracks are seasonal: White Christmas and All I want for Christmas is you, but it hasn’t stopped me from listening to the album through into the New Year and on. After all you can probably programme your CD player to skip these if it really bothers you.

Title:The Trouble with Love is Artist: Kelly Clarkson What else has this artist done:Miss Independant About the song: This is a clever song, it talks about the way we never learn from the pain of previous loves but are caught again when we fall in love all over again. It is the story of the unavoidability of love, and the pain that it can bring. This song’s message is “Love as if you’ve never been hurt before.” The music is soulful. You’ve probably heard it on the radio. Line from the song:Said love wasn't worth the pain But then I hear it call my name
Title:Here with me Artist:Dido What else has this artist done:Thank you, White Flag About the song:If you’re a Dido fan then you are bound to have heard this before on her previous album. It’s slow and moving. Reminds me of the Greek myth of the wife who was waiting for her lover to return after he had sailed away, promising to do so. Think her name was Penelope. Anyway, this song is all about the woman who has been left, and the void in her life and her inability to function normally now that her love is missing. The music has a steady beat and an acoustic sound, but this is a sad song compared to some of the earlier ones. Line from the song: I don't want to call my friends They might wake me from this dream
Title:Sweetest Goodbye Artist:Maroon 5 About the song:A more modern sounding song, and not especially one of my favourites from the album. The lyrics are a bit harder to relate to. They are about a commitment made to a lover and the benefits promised. Line from the song: And if it never ends then when do we start?
Title:Wherever you will go Artist:The Calling About the song:This is a rock ballad, with a male artist. Full of promise, up-beat and half way through the album livens things up again. Line from the song: If I could, then I would I'll go wherever you will go
Title:Jump Artist:Girls Aloud What else has this artist done:Sounds of the Underground, Life Got Cold About the song:Lively, upbeat, strong rhythm will have you dancing whilst you do the washing up! A fantastically strong song to kick the album off with. It will bring back amusing memories of Hugh Grant dancing if you’ve seen the film too. Line from the song: Jump you want to taste my kisses In the night
Title:Both sides Now Artist:Joni Mitchell What else has this artist done:Big Yellow Taxi About the song:Joni’s usual talent for lyrics, this is about seeing two sides of love and life. The song is cleverly used to highlight a moving scene in the film. Here on the album you are free to listen more carefully to this thoughtful song. Gentle music which builds up and a tremendous power of expression. Line from the song: Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.
Title:I’ll see it through Artist:Texas What else has this artist done:Black Eyed Boy, White on Blonde About the song:Typical Texas sound, this is another major artist on the album. The lyrics are about a woman considering how her love is all she has ever wanted and so important to her that she will make an effort to maintain her relationship. Fairly deep. Not a bouncy song like some of the others, nor necessarily a cheerful one. Perhaps more realistic though. Line from the song: And loving you's the right thing to do And I'll see it through
Title:Too lost in you Artist:Sugarbabes What else has this artist done:Round Round About the song:A strong feminine song from the Sugarbabes. Reminiscent of some of the Corr’s work in terms of the lyrics. This is the second track on the album, but one of the main ones in many ways, and you will probably have heard it getting considerable air time on the radio recently. Line from the song: And my knees are weak And my mouth can't speak Fell too far this time
Title:Christmas is all around me Artist:Billy Mack About the song:A take of of “Love is all around me”, this song is deliberately bordering on the tasteless, and plays a role as such in the film. It is a comment on the “Christmas no.1” race. Truly tacky! Line from the song: You gave your presents to me And I gave mine to you
Title:All I want for Christmas is you Artist:Mariah Carey What else has this artist done:Fantasy, Hero About the song:A nice rendition of this song, albeit more appropriate for the right time of year. Mariah Carey has a good voice for singing this one and I kept finding myself singing it after hearing it the first few times. Line from the song: I don't want a lot for Christmas There's just one thing I need
Title: Three tracks representing the Love Themes for various aspects of the film. Artist: Craig Armstrong What else has this artist done:Music for Mulin Rouge, Plunkett and Maclean About the song:These are the musical themes from the movie, and they are well done, building up to the climaxes of three separate threads of the story, the resolution of three sub-plots. Nice orchestral pieces, might mean more to you if you’ve seen the film and felt the suspense associated with them. Line from the song:No lyrics.
Title:All you need is love About the song:You must have heard this one. An old classic that builds up. Not the most modern song on the album. Line from the song: All you need is love, love, love is all you need
Title: God only knows what I'd be without you Artist:The Beach Boys About the song:Another old classic. Line from the song: God only knows what I'd be without you
Title:Turn Me On Artist:Norah Jones What else has this artist done:Come away with me, Don’t know why I didn’t come. About the song:A simple song, someone waiting for their love to return and brighten their life- could be after a short absence or a longer one. The song is performed in Norah’s typical gentle manner. Line from the song: Im just sitting here waiting for you To come on home and turn me on
Title:Songbird Artist:Eva Cassidy What else has this artist done:Kathy’s Song, Time after Time About the song:This is my favourite song from the album. It’s stunning. It’s about the woman who has just lost her partner, and realises she loves him more than ever. It’s about the irony she sees in the songbirds singing around her despite this. The tune is lovely. This song alone would have sold me the album, yet it is one of the less well aired on the radio recently. Line from the song: And the songbirds keep singing Like they know the score And I love you, I love you, I love you Like never before
I must watch love actually and then I'll appreciate this CD a bit more, though I like quite a lot of the songs, so may skip the film and go straight for the soundtrack. Great review
