It's fairly hard to write a review of an artist most have probably never heard of, but I'll try my best.
Intro
I discovered Jenny Wilson by mistake, I'd found a video on youtube of her and Robyn doing a cover of a song called 'list of demands' and out of curiosity I did a bit more research into who Jenny Wilson was, I was glad that I had. After hearing a few songs online, I found the album (which wasn't that easy) and brought a copy, it's a very original sound with beautiful instrumental arrangements and I couldn't understand why I had not heard of her. Like Robyn she is a Swedish singer, although their music is not at all the same. Since my other music review is on Robyn's album it may look as if I am Swedish myself or a huge fan of Swedish music, I'm not.. and I say this from an honest British perspective - If she's popular in Sweden, why isn't she popular here? It's really satisfying to find such talent in an artist that none of your friends have heard of, but it's frustrating as well, so my review is made in order to encourage others to seek beyond regular british or american pop.
Genre
I find it hard to define the genre of Wilson's music, judging by her myspace - she considers herself 'alternative/ pop', but it's very acoustic with lots of beautiful melodies. Her singing voice explores mainly higher pitches and overdubbing creates really original sounds. For some reason her music reminds me of the French film Amelie, possibly because the soundtrack sounds similar or it could be something else.
Content
One of the most outstanding songs of the album is 'summertime - the roughest time' which was a song I'd found on youtube and had persuaded me to get the album. it sounded like nothing I had ever heard. With a slightly irregular backbeat, pitch jumps and trumpet riffs the song still manages to remain beautiful and relaxing. even if it is essentially about the pressures of having to love during summer.
Another great track on the album is the catchy 'let my shoes lead me forward', with a good piano part and a normal structure, but Wilson's unique clean voice still makes the track what it is.
Most tracks are lyrically excellent, exploring topics like: seasons, a first day at school, music industry and different characters.
SO... I would recommend this album to anyone who likes acoustic sounds, but music taste varies so if you haven't heard her I suggest a bit of research first!
