Originally released back in 1974 and was then a double LP, it has been remastered and the entire work now fits onto a single disc. Anyone familiar with Todd Rundgren's work will know that he is a singer / songwriter first and foremost but can also take the credit for producing many other artists' work. His songs tend to be a mixture of soulful ballad type things and guitar based rock., the latter being especially true when recording with his sometime band Utopia. A multi-instrumentalist, he was one of the first musicians to record entire albums where he played all of the instruments, arranged the music, wrote and sang all of the songs and produced the finished article. This particular offering was recorded during Todd's "psychedelic" phase, which started with "A Wizard A True Star" in 1973 and ending with "Initiation" in 1975 ...

Imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Advantages: Studio versions of "live" classics
Disadvantages: Some of the "covers" are a bit dodgy

name at this stage) "Love of the Common Man" is next up. A soulful ballad betraying Rundgren's Philadelphia roots and his love of black music. This is greeted by howls of joy when played "live". (You know how American audiences get) "When I Pray" is a quiet reflective piece with Todd on piano. Not one of my favourites and quite forgettable in the grand scheme of things.Pretty though! "Cliche" is another Rundgren standard. Features a stunning keyboard solo and some excellent percussion. "The Verb "To Love"". A bit sloppy for my taste. A few falsetto vocal lines showing how flexible Todd's voice is and some fine keyboard work. A soft song. A bit too soft for me. The final track, "Boogies (Hambuger Hell)", is a brilliantly loud piece of Rock 'n' Roll! Showing what a brilliant guitarist Rundgren is, this is a throughly ...

Is it Benjamin Barker OR Sweeney Todd?

Advantages: great flowing film
Disadvantages: Johnny Depp's Voice
