You may have already realised that I am a great Elvis fan, why I had heard of him, before anyone else had ---so there. That was at school back in the era of rock' roll rebels.
Elvis is first and foremost a Rocker with a capital R. Why he put the pelvis into rock, when we daren't even use the word---PELVIS that is.
However what about this thought of, "The Greatest Romantic Singer" of all time? How do you rate Elvis has a singer of love songs? A wandering minstrel of the heart?
If you are in any doubt at all , then treat yourself to his "LOVE SONGS". You will melt!
First song: Love me Tender, from the film of the same title,based on an American Civil War song AURA LEE this reached a million sales in 1956, yes 1956, how many of you know this song? I am sure you love it too. For my darling I love you, and I always will.
Who do you think would have the nerve to take an Italian classic---"O sole mio" Recording this latin beat to "It's Now or Never", a great dance tune this, with a rumba style beat, one to dance up close and personal to.Surely the Italians have forgiven him for this. It did cause raised eyebrows at the time.
Do the chairs in your parlour seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? Yes it's "Are YOU Lonesome Tonight" Well who could be when they have his wonderful husky voice asking this question, and what about the bit where he speaks straight to you from the heart
"Don't," 1957 this,by Leiber/Stoller, I mean who else could sing "Don't"----and sound so stunningly appealing.
Next another 1957 hit "Loving You" this one from Elvis's second film of the same title.
No.6,is a ballad from the film Blue Hawaii: " Can't Help Falling in Love"---I mean who couldn't help falling in love----- No. 7 is the classic "Love Letters"---straight fom your heart, and that is how he sings it.
No.8 is the gut wrenching-----"I want you, I need you, I love you" recorded in Nashville in 1956, hey Elvis nearly didn't make this session, as the pilot of the plane nearly ran out of fuel.But Elvis didn't as you can hear in this brilliant track.
No. 9 is another great love song---"That's When Your Heartaches Begin" No.10 is the song "True Love", a perfect version of this, better than any other,.
No.10, is a Heart-stopper, by Silver/Shroeder, title "Your so Young and Beautiful" What a voice, I mean how he loved women, and how he loved to sing about women.
No 12--"Doing the Best I Can" That is just what I am doing now, but you must listen yourself--Hey I have this music in my head now, and it makes me want to play it for all of you, young lovers out there. I mean romance cannot possibly be dead. Can it? Well it won't be if you play this track!
Next two tracks are "Something Blue", followed by "Angel" Don't you just love it when some guy calls you angel.THis track featured in the film "Follow that Dream"
No 15 "That's Someone you never forget" Elvis recorded this because it reminded him of his Mum Gladys who died in 1958. No 16 is"Just Pretend", real smoochy numbers these, do yourselves a favour, take her in your arms and play this music.
No 17is the classic, "For the Good Times"
No 18 is the only one' dare I say it that I am not so keen on.It is "Woman Without Love", I think he must have been thinking of someone in particular when he sang this song.
No 19,--"He'll have to Go", best version ever,recorded just before he died in 1977. No. 20 "It's Impossible" It is impossible not to fall in love with this rendition of a great song.
What a collection of wonderful lurv songs by the greatest romantic ballad singer of all time.
I am completely exhausted, I shall have to go and lie down!
You know Elvis once said"Ican't do ballads as well as I can do the other stuff because I don't have the voice for it. Oh yes he has!
