This is Alice Sebold?s second novel. I read ?The Lovely Bones? and decided fairly early on in the book that I liked her style of writing and ordered ?Lucky? from the internet.
This is a true memoir of when Alice was an 18 year old freshman student in 1980s America and was brutally raped and beaten up in a park on campus.
As you can imagine, this book is not an easy read. From the first page the shock of her rape forces the reader to live through the whole ordeal with her. It is quite appalling to read. She is humiliated, degraded and violated in a number of ways under the threat of a man?s knife. He then urinates on her. Afterwards, he cries and says he?s sorry. He makes her ?kiss? him goodbye. He takes her only money ? eight dollars.

Joshua Ralph's original score and plays against type for this kind of movie, sticking with a largely classical style. The film opens with a suite of harp and brooding strings that sets the scene and ramps up the tension with rising drums, reedy flutes, tense cellos and pounding rhythms. There are flourishes of harpsichord and strident deep brass while archetypal private eye sax motifs occasionally appear. There is a smattering of playful flutes that add a lighter tone, offset by reverberating chimes and piano as ends are tied. The soundtrack also adds to the retro feel of the movie with old-style soul and a rendition of "Kansas City Shuffle" that closes out proceedings.
