Already the years most hyped new artist--not only first in the BBCs famously unreliable ... more
poll of new talent and recipient of a special Brit award devised just for her--Florence Welch has a lot to live up to, and thankfully the artfully titled and sleeved Lungs justifies the investment. The singles are undeniably the standouts. The impressive "Dog Days Are Over", neurotic and fierce, and the slightly more reserved follow-up "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" lead her debut collection, sometimes overshadowing her other material. Yet the extremes of "Kiss With A Fist", a jokey celebration of mutual domestic violence and noisy guitars that shamelessly steals its melody from the White Stripes charming "We Are Gonna Be Friends", and the showstopping, almost unashamedly stagy "Girl With One Eye" show off both her development and an already instantly recognisable voice. The gallows humour of songs like "Between Two Lungs", the daft "My Boy Builds Coffins" and the ferocious "Hurricane Drunk" where she threatens "Im gonna drink myself to death" backed by a spirited choir of Florences, save her from accusations of self-absorption. The concluding, and hugely loud "Blinding" is all Kate Bush tics over bruising drum patterns. So a straightforward and affectionate cover of the classic Candi Staton and Source club banger "Youve Got The Love", previously only available online, comes as a welcome chance to get ones breath back. Much better than an apparent plan to position her as some kind of missing link between PJ Harvey and Avril Lavigne suggested, Lungs is a clever, catchy set, yet unresolved enough to sustain curiosity.--Steve Jelbert

Advantages: Vocals, just generally amazing! Disadvantages: Nothing
...where she sings 'Between two lungs it was released, the breath that captured me, the sigh that blew me forward'. It just sounds like being blissfully in love.
Cosmic Love:
Music - With, what I think is, a harp the music sounds very angelic to begin with. Then the drums kick in, making it sound extremely dramatic.
Vocals - Do I even need to say? The vocals are beautiful and powerful in this song. You just need ... ...can have in the background. Her voice is always in the forefront of your mind when you're listen to this album, it's captivating and gives me goosebumps.
Lyrics - I think this song about a girl falling in love with a man, but thinks he doesn't love her back but when she detracts herself away from him, he's also 'left in the dark' as he now thinks she doesn't love him. I like the references to the stars and the moon, it makes the love ... more
Dog Days Are Over: This is the first song on the album and the second single released from the album.
Music - The song starts off very softly with just a guitar, it then builds up to the chorus with the help of some clapping & drums. The build up is extremely climactic and it's easy to get drawn into this song and get lost in the music.
Vocals - As always, Florence's vocals are amazing. Her voice ranges from soft & angelic to strong & powerful. Her voice is slightly operatic at points and although this sounds slightly strange, it fits in well with the song.
Lyrics - I love the lyrics as they're open to interpretation, there is no right answer to what this song is about unless you ask Florence herself. I personally think this song is about a person falling in love really quickly, but trying to get away after being hurt.
Song rating: 5/5
Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up):
Music - The song starts off with a kind of Chinese feel with the plucking some instrument and the drums. It sounds a bit like a war song, quite melodramatic and sad.
Vocals - Florence's vocals add towards the overall feel of the song, she injects a lot of passion into the song and makes it sound urgent. Although her voice doesn't have the same range in this song as it did in the previous, it's still really beautiful. The backing vocals really add to the song and are also the reason why I think it sounds like a war song.
Lyrics - The lyrics are wonderful, I think they're about choosing the right life for you and not wasting it, but again they're open to interpretation. They take on a kind of greek feel with the themes of sacrificing and raising the sacrifice to the Gods.
Song rating: 5/5
I'm Not Calling You A Liar:
Music - The song starts off with just Florence and what sounds like Christmas bells. Then a string instrument comes in, perhaps a harp. It all sounds quite ethereal. It isn't as catchy as other songs on the album, so less memorable.
Vocals - Her voice is, as always, beautiful. It's quite strong compared to the music, but at parts it's very soft and makes her sound really quite vulnerable.
Lyrics - I think this song about being with someone you love, but is a bad person and you know that you shouldn't be with them, but your soul is drawing you to them.
Song rating: 4/5 - I'm taking a star off because I think it could have been more passionate due to the subject matter.
Howl:
Music - The song sounds quite 80s with the piano when it starts off, but it soon gets into the fast paced passion with drums and Florence's voice. It's sounds quite catchy, but also very dramatic with the violins.
Vocals - I love Florence's voice in this song, it's filled with passion and sounds really wonderful with the dramatic background of the music. You really feel as though she's quietly screaming inside...in a good music making way...
Lyrics - I'm not really sure what this song is about. At first I thought it was about being broken hearted and trying to get revenge, but the more I listen to it I feel like it's about wanting to be with someone so much and it completely taking over your life and that impatient longing that you have. Almost animalistic. The lyrics are excellent and convey the obsessive component of love well.
Star rating: 5/5
Kiss With A Fist:
Music - It starts off with just Florence's voice which catches your attention straight away, then in come the drums and guitar turning it into a rocky song which should be played as loud as possible. It's very catchy and impossible to sing and dance along to.
Vocals - I can't stop raving about Florence's voice, it's honestly amazing. If I had it, I'd be singing every conversation I had. Her voice sounds quite raw in this and goes well with the violence in the song lyrics.
Lyrics - This song seems to be about domestic violence, but Florence herself said it isn't. I think it's about non-physical fights in a relationship being good and healthy, hence the name of the song. Or two people constantly arguing with each other and pushing each other to extremes.
Star rating: 5/5
Girl With One Eye: This is a cover of a song written by her ex-boyfriend's band The Ludes, although I don't think it was ever recorded.
Music - This song reminds me of a kind of acoustic, cabaret performance. It sounds sinister and sexy. It seems very controlled until a certain point where it builds up to this amazingly dramatic climax.
Vocals - Again, Florence's vocals are exceptional in this song. She's able to pull off being sexy and mysterious, her voice is very engaging. The vocals are also excellent during dramatic points in the song. Excellent job done by Florence, as always.
Lyrics - I'm really, really not sure what this song is about. When I listened to it; I thought it was about a girl being hurt and being worried she'll be hurt again. But I'm highly likely to be wrong about that, I think these lyrics are just there to be interpreted in a way that makes you connect with the song.
Star rating: 5/5
Drumming Song:
Music - There is a mixture of drum beats to begin with, then throughout the song other instruments join in to make a dramatic air about the song. It's mainly Florence's the voice that provide most of the melody of the song though. It does slightly remind me of Evanescence though...but only the good parts of Evanescence...
Vocals - I know I keep repeating myself, but honestly, Florence's voice is one of the best out there. I think this song is one of the best on the album due to the fact that her voice is so great on it. There is so much passion in her voice, it's overwhelming.
Lyrics - I feel like this song is about love and the intense feelings that come along with it. It's about being surrounding by it and not being able to escape, in a good way. I also think these lyrics are the best on the album.
Star rating: 5/5 (I wish I could give it more stars...)
Between Two Lungs:
Music - This song starts off really differently from the other songs on the album, it's a nice surprise. It sounds quite chilled out and flowing. It's a really beautiful song and it reminds me of sitting in the sun and feeling in love. It's very upbeat and cheery.
Vocals - As usual: outstanding. Her voice sounds happy in this song and it goes well with the upbeat music. She really makes you smile.
Lyrics - I feel that they're about love and being able to share your all with the other person. Although, they're not like you're usual love song with lines such as 'we are all too young to die', the lyrics are really beautiful. Especially at the beginning of the song where she sings 'Between two lungs it was released, the breath that captured me, the sigh that blew me forward'.
You just need to sit and listen to her, she's not someone you can have in the background.
I like the references to the stars and the moon, it makes the love seem huge and pretty like the universe. It makes for great imagery.
My Boy Builds Coffins:
Music - This song isn't nowhere near as catchy as some other songs, it's quite simple and laidback and I suppose the subject of coffins wouldn't have fitted with an upbeat song.
Vocals - I think Florence's voice really makes this song, it's beautiful and sounds quite caring. She sounds genuinely upset by 'her boys' profession.
Lyrics - Supposedly, this song is about one of Florence's ex-boyfriends who made coffins. She feels that it's ashame that all his life work, all the love he puts into making coffins, is pointless as they're just put into the ground and never seen again.
Star rating: 3/5 - I think it's a nice song, just not one of my favourites.
Hurricane Drunk:
Music - The music is quite catchy and foot-tapping-ish, lol. It has some soft elements too. It fits in well with the the lyrics because although the person should be upset/angry about seeing her ex with someone else, they're just like 'fuck it, let's get drunk!'. It sounds very uncaring.
Vocals - Excellent as always, she does make it sounds as though she's quite indifferent to the situation and you do feel that 'fuck it' emotion when you listen to her. She also sounds relatively happy with the situation, like the relief of not having to care anymore due to being drunk.
Lyrics - The song is about going out, seeing your ex with someone else and you knowing they've moved on but you not caring because you're going to get completely drunk. I quite like this song and I think it's something that many people can connect with.
Star rating: 5/5
Blinding:
Music - I think this song is really different from anything else on the album, although it does have some Florence elements to it. It has an overall dramatic feel to it.
Vocals - Her voice is really beautiful and powerful in this song, she sounds sad and defeated. It does sound as though she's asleep and trying to keep herself dreaming by not talking to loud.
Lyrics - I think this song is about her losing someone and not wanting to realise that they're gone, either by staying asleep or using drugs. The lyrics are excellent in this song and it's easy to relate to the song. Everyone's had to deal with something and just wanted to stay asleep so that they don't have to cope with the truth.
Star rating: 4/5 - Again, not a favourite.
You've Got The Love:
Music - This is a beautiful cover, it's really laid back and chilled out. It's to just close your eyes and listen to.
Vocals - Her voice sounds naked, in a good way! She does an excellent job on this cover, but you wouldn't expect anything less from Florence!
Lyrics - They weren't written by Florence so there's no need to comment on them.
Star rating: 5/5
Overall
It's an amazing album, there are a good range of different songs which show off the incredible talent Florence has. This album really is a must-have, it's absolutely amazing. I can't wait for the next installment from Florence!
It's available from Amazon for £8.98 and Play from £8.95, well worth the pennies!
Advantages: Excellent refreshing contemporary sound! Disadvantages: The production needed more consistency and the track listing needs revising!
This album is fantastic, although to be critical, I personally believe a little more time should have been spent on some of the tracks with respect to the consistency in production and stronger lyrics. This album apparently was produced by three people; Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, Jack Penate, Maximo Park), James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons, Last Shadow Puppets) and Steve Mackay (Pulp, M.I.A.), where it should have been produced by one and one only! ... ...approach and may have sorted out the track listing to give a more continuous flow. However, the ‘Gothic Pop’ of the so called new answer to the ‘lack of Kate Bush’ has made an excellent start to her career, but will she be able to keep it up? I for one hope so! Essentially her main skills belong to the live stage where she is emphatic in her performances. In a similar mould to Muse the one may always complement the other. The lyrics are sublime although ...

Advantages: Catchy as a cold. Disadvantages: Bit sameish.
This album is sure to go massive! To be honest i'm not a massive Florence and the Machine, however, this album has wormed is way into my music library and i must admit, it is top class! The album is Indie/Alternative style, and is very easy listening, and you find the time flies when you have this playing. This is mostly down to the amazing vocals of frontwoman, Florence Welch. The opening track 'Dog Days Are Over', has a catchy chorus with an infectious ... ...The next song, Rabbit Heart [Raise It Up], was released as a single and features on Now 73. This song plays around with unusual rhythms in the background while Florence bursts into a highly contagious chorus. This song is probably the best on the album, and the best Florence tune since 'You Got The Love'. Other highlights on the album include the single 'Kiss With A Fist' and 'Drumming'. The rest of the album is quite similar, Florence's high key ...

Review of Lungs - Florence & The Machine
Advantages: Hauntingly beautiful tracks, massive lyrics and epic melodies. Disadvantages: Might take a little getting used to, but its worth it!
Wow. I first heard this band on the Jonathon Ross Show, then again at T in the Park and each time my reaction was the same. Wow. The debut album 'Lungs' is currently at #2 in the album charts, pipped only by Michael Jackson. The blend of Florence Welch's powerful and unique voice and inventive melodies create a sound I could listen to all day long - and indeed have done! Initially I thought the vocals were too choppy, too 'out of sync' with the music ... ...By the end of the first track 'Dog Days Are Over' I was hooked. I yearned to hear more, to submerse myself in the album. 'Rabbit Heart' will be familiar to most by now having spent the last 23 weeks in the UK charts peaking at #12. My favourite track from the album, 'Cosmic Love' blends big bass with haunting lyrics to create an epic sound which peaked the Irish charts at #2. This album has tremendous lyrics, as you may have guessed since I keep ...

Advantages: Amazing band! Disadvantages: Not for everyone
I have to say, Florence + The Machine are a great refreshing band that gives a you a wonderful musical experience. Florence Welch's voice is a beautiful change from many female artists these days. Every track on this album is amazing but here are a few that I must give extra praise to. 'Dog Days Are Over' and 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)' are both absolutely amazing songs. Really easy to relax and chill out when listening to them. 'Kiss With A Fist' ... ...because of hearing this song on the 4Music advert that made me look into this band and ultimately buy this album. I can't help singing it out loud when hearing it, which is quite weird as I'm essentially loving a song which is more or less about domestic violence, but that just shows just how amazing this song is and how amazing this band are. Overall, this album is an amazing album if you are trying to chill out and relax or even if your trying ...

Advantages: Extra tracks and better sleeve, some good remixes of the most well known original tracks Disadvantages: Possibly enough room on one CD to incorporate all 20 tracks
I loved this album so much, I decided to buy the Special Edition version as well as the original and it was worth forking out the extra money.
If you saw how amazing the live TV coverage of Florence and the Machine was at Glastonbury this year and you don't already own the album, I would highly recommend buying this CD instead of the single disc version.
The extra disc includes demo versions and re-mixes of what I believe are some of the best tracks on the album. 'Girl with one eye', a cover version of a punk song written by a band florence used to hang out with, but sung here in her unique and powerful style.
Dog days is an uplifting tale of someone struggling with depression, suddenly awaking from bad times in their life, the lyrics are a celebration of embracing the optimism of the future, "The dog days are over" and "Happiness hit ...
Advantages: Very original artist, Great voice, Catchy pop/indie songs suitable for everyone Disadvantages: CD2 is a bit dissapointing and pointless, some tracks are a bit strange
After hearing the singles and loving them i was extremely excited for the release of this album! It's starts with 'dog days are over' which is extremely energetic at points and reminds me of some sort of folklore song. 'Rabbit Heart' gets onto the more gory theme of the album - this being bodily organs, blood and death, and really highlights the depths of florences voice. 'Howl' is an almost perfect pop song and lyrically is very original. 'Kiss with a fist' was probably her first major piece that made people recognise how great she was. It's quite short however and just as your beginning to enjoy it it's over, more of an interlude than a song. 'Girl with one eye', 'between two lungs' and 'my boy builds coffins' keep the album on it's gory theme throughout. 'Drumming' is also an amazing song that really emphasises different sounds. I can ...
