Live albums are quite often a record companies approach to ripping off fans, but I am very happy with this acoustic/live album. The recording is very good, and this is an album I like to listen to when I’m in a calm mood, or when its late and I don’t want to annoy the neighbours (or my family!).
If you've read any of my other reviews on Alice in Chains I have mentioned about the band going through hard times, and because of the drug abuse which eventually killed Staley in 2002, this album (which was recorded in 1996) was the first show they had managed to play in 3 years!
The album has 13 tracks, 12 classic tracks and a new song but all in acoustic versions, which are very interesting to here!
1 Nutshell 2 Brother 3 No Excuses 4 Sludge Factory 5 Down In A Hole 6 Angry Chair 7 Rooster 8 Got Me Wrong 9 Heaven Beside You 10 Would? 11 Frogs 12 Over Now 13 Killer Is Me (New track)
Performing on the album are three original members:
Layne Staley - vocals, and additional guitar on the track 'angry chair'. Jerry Cantrell - Guitar & Vocals Sean Kinney - Drums
Mike Inez, who joined the band when Mike star left, plays bass and guitar on 'Killer Is Me', and there is guest guitarist Scott Olsen who plays guitar, and bass on 'Killer Is Me'.
The album starts of with calm tracks taken from the bands EP's, 'Nutshell' and 'No Excuses' from Jar Of Flies, and 'Brother' from the SAP EP. These tracks are a nice introduction to the album, and they sound amazing live!

The closing to tracks prove that Alice In Chains were still capable of writing excellent songs, 'Over Now' is the closing track to the self titled album which was released just before the Unplugged album, and after a quick joke song, the final track, and newest track 'Killer Is Me' closes the album.
Cantrell sings on the track, and it is an odd song because its about being a murderer 'So the sun, Shines upon me/ Having fun, Killer is me', there may be a message hidden in somewhere though, its a very good track and a great way to close the album!
I paid £15 for this at HMV, I think this might be a bit steep but I am a big fan, this is one of those albums you'll either love or hate, it might be best trying to borrow a copy of somebody first before making your mind up.
Advantages: Great live songs Disadvantages: Nothing new for veterans of the band
As Alice In Chains lead singer Layne Staley screams "I want you to kill me and dig me under , I wanna live no more" you realise Alice In Chains: Live isn't exactly the feel good holiday album of the year. Then again Alice In Chains certainly wasn't the feel good band of the decade.
Alice In Chains: Live feels like a last ditch effort by Columbia records to squeeze a few final dollars out of band that has been inactive for the past four years due ... ...who remain interested in the band will certainly enjoy the 14 powerful live electric tracks provided on this album designed to show their live heavy side, not the soft live side we saw on Unplugged.
What we get on this album are renditions of songs that are pretty true to their studio counterparts, and the stark production of this album authentically represents the feeling of an Alice In Chains show from the early to mid 90's. It shows the band ...

Alice in Chains- Unplugged is a must have album. The thirteen songs on this album display a new depth and lend something new to some old songs. None of the tracks loose anything in there acoustic form. The songs are imbued with a new sense of meaning and although not what I would call easy listening the album is very accessible. However none of the songs loose there edge, stings are used, but sparingly and there use has obviously been thought through. ...

Advantages: You'll never hear or see this band play live ever again! Disadvantages: Not many!
I have this album on both DVD format & CD.
Alice in Chains sound like many of the bands at this time, especially;
Nirvana & Soundgarden.
Lane has a gritty sounding voice like many of the Seattle front bands, it is rocking grunge with harmonies & soft/ hard music progression.
To compare 'AIC' to bands that have probably copied them would be an insult, however, if you like the following bands, it may be worth checking out 'Alice In Chains';
Audioslave,
... ...the album, as I listen to the following bands;
Creed, Pearl Jam, Nickelback, Metallica, Incubus, Audislave, Our Lady Peace, Foo Fighters, 12 Stones, Thornley, Puddle of Mudd, Theory of a Deadman & Default- so if you like any of the bands I like, try Alice In Chains out now!

Advantages: Must have for all Die Hard Grunge Fans - A Masterpiece!! Disadvantages: WE WANT MORE!!
...The cd tracks an MTV unplugged session which was one of the last of Alice in chains LIVE appearnces! Tracks range from some of the more mainstream songs to slightly more rare stuff from 'Jar of Flies' and 'Sap'.
Shows much more originality that other unplugged stuff such as Nirvana's 'Unplugged in New York' These arn't just Alice songs played unplugged but new masterpieces in thier own right! The sound quality is great and the atmosphere created ...

Advantages: Technically superb group of musicians Disadvantages: Sometimes difficult to get into
, the hidden track on Sap. In my eyes, Jar of Flies was the stronger of the two albums, as well as having a couple more tracks on it.
From here I bought a best of collection, featuring ten tracks taken from the bands three main albums, Facelift, Dirt and AliceinChains.
This is a much more accurate sample of the Alice sound, featuring softer songs such as Heaven Beside You and Rooster, but also heavier, darker songs such as Them Bones and Angry Chair. I would recommend this album as a good starting point. If you prefer the softer songs, then buy Jar of Flies/Sap and MTVUnplugged. If the heavier, darker songs are more your style, then I would recommend you buy Dirt, then Facelift, then AliceinChains.
The MTVUnplugged album is an interesting one. It takes a lot of Alice songs which lend themselves to such an acoustic show easily (Rooster ...

Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Mike Inez (guitar, bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Scott Olson (guitar, bass). Recorded at The Majestic Theater, Brooklyn Academy Of Music, Brooklyn, New York on April 10, 1996. UNPLUGGED isn't Alice In Chains' first unplugged record; it's just the first official, MTV-sanctioned one. The EPs JAR OF FLIES and SAP are both low-key, mostly-acoustic outings that achieved a similar vibe without the benefit of an MTV appearance. Which is to say Alice In Chains isn't jumping on a bandwagon here; they're doing more of something they do very well. UNPLUGGED features acoustic versions of songs from every record in the Seattle band's catalog except its debut, FACELIFT. And it heavily features guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who wrote or co-wrote 12 of these 13 songs, including the previously-unrecorded "Killer Is Me." Cantrell's vocals pace that one along with "Heaven Beside You" and "Over Now." Lead singer Layne Staley, meanwhile, finds a fitting outlet here for his creaky voice, particularly as he tackles harrowing images of drug addiction in "Sludge Factory" and "Down In A Hole."
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (10/3/96, pp.71-72) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Some of the performances...hardly vary at all from the original studio versions....It's in the older material that the real changes go down... Q (10/96, p.153) - 3 Stars - Good - "...the fourpiece add Scott Olson on guitar and reveal some exhilarating examples of pure songwriting....drug-induced demons made all the more scary because of the intimacy of the interpretations..."
