Advantages: Pure Gomez Disadvantages: Not enough of them
After an amazing debut, and a equally good follow up, Gomex deserved a break. But not to dissapoint their fans, they left with a 5-track e.p. that has me begging for more. If we listen to the title track, it's clear that their music is evolving, but is still traditional 'Gomez'. The next track of note is 'Touchin' Up', a fantastic mellow song that delivers both Ian and Ben's different but soulful voices. Tom gets his show with 'Wasted', in which ... ...final track 'The Dajon song', (I presume a tribute to the talented percussionist) Ian croons 'I'm not as Dajon as you', which makes no sense to me, but I'm sure he knows. To cut to the chase, this is a brilliant taster of where Gomez are going, and I look forward to seeing them this summer. It's going to me quite a long time now before the next release, but at least we've got three superb albums to keep us going.

...have discovered samples. Machismo is the first in a series of EPs to be released by the band as a follow up to their Mercury Prize winning debut album, Bring It On and their second album, Liquid Skin. The classic Gomez sound is still there to be heard on Machismo, including catchy acoustic guitar riffs and unmistakable vocals, but they have also introduced samples and have experimented with some new sounds. The results are good and they prove that ...

Advantages: Waster, a bit more experimental Disadvantages: The repetitive Dajon Song, not as good as previous releases
...trend, but my views on Machismo might differ from other Gomez fans. The CD itself is a 5 track EP, which was released after Liquid Skin but before the Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline collection. Owing to the fact its an EP it allowed the band to experiment a bit more, using samplers and drum machines obviously on this release.
The result, I find is a bit patchy. The song Machismo is nice enough, but the lyrics are a bit confusing ("He don't do ... ...little dull. Touchin' Up begins in the same trend, but thankfully recovers and becomes a lot more inspiring, and the snappy Waster that follows is probably my highlight of the EP. The final track - The Dajon Song - is 13 minutes song and I have to say its certainly a few minutes longer than it should be. I don't dislike the track, but its sheer repetitiveness doesn't make it a great song.
Overall, I think this wasn't a great release from the band ...

This is Gomez’ third full studio album, follows the extremely successful Bring It On, and Liquid Skin. I between Gomez kept the fans happy with the superb Machismo EP and the Abandoned Shopping Trolley Helpline rarity album. I duly rushed onto the net and pre-ordered my copy form CD-Wow for an excellent £8.99. Although I didn’t get it on the release day of 18th March I had saved £4 and only had to wait until the Thursday, not bad when it comes all the way from Hong Kong. Back to the CD then it has the usual 13 tracks and is around 60 mins in length, nothing new there then for a Gomez record.
Shot Shot – the first track on the album and also the first single. It starts off with a catchy solo riff onto which come familiar haunting Gomez lyrics. It then turns into a full-blown Gomez jam trombone, trumpets and all ...
