Matchbox Twenty – A Match made in heaven.
<Introduction> Matchbox 20, probably one of the most unique bands ever to hit the music industry, being huge in America many of my readers will have heard of this band before, however in England, this is not the case, the band has had little or no publicity over here and so has not reached its full potential, and believe me…. This band has potential! The two albums that made the band in a similar way that Enema of the state made Blink 182 are “Yourself or someone like you” and the one that this opinion is about “Mad season”.
<A little bit of history> Matchbox 20 had not always been known as Matchbox 20, they originally started out as Tabitha’s Secret. But due to a sudden departure of two of the band members, the remaining band members decided they would stick together and they reformed as Matchbox 20. After the hit release of “You, yourself, or someone like you” Matchbox 20 decided to formally change there name from Matchbox 20 to Matchbox Twenty. And it was under this knew name that they released Mad Season. I am to understand that a third album is currently being recorded and is set to be released in early November, The first single is to be named disease and is due for release in October.
<Mad Season>
This unique style of music follows throughout this album, and this is what attracts
me to them. Few bands have actually attracted me to there music is the same way as Matchbox 20. One of the bands main downfalls is that the style of their music does not vary. So for those that don’t like this style, there’s nothing to keep them interested. The music seems to borderline on soft rock and punk, the music screams experience and care. A brilliant advantage of Matchbox 20 is that the songs are always knew and original. The entire Mad Season album was written by Rob Thomas (One of the lead vocalists).
<The Songs>
1. ANGRY - This one seems to be about the break up of a relationship. A strangely bitter and yet optimistic feel good view about the future and the past. Somehow this song covers every angle of emotions endured after a break up. It feels as though it has been written following a real break up, a true story so to speak, but that is purely speculation.
2. BLACK & WHITE PEOPLE - As opposed to being another song about racism as it would seem judging by the title, similar to Michaels Jackson’s Black or White, its not! Its about different people, and about the fact that every single one individual is…. Well,….. an individual, and is not the same in any way shape or form. That we are all unique. The song seems to explain that you should not be lonely just because no one understands you, everyone is different and that needs to be accepted.
3. CRUTCH - A little twisted and bitter perhaps, again it seems to be about love and life, and how bad it is. Sounds like the sort of lyrics that would come from Marilyn Manson. Unfortunately it does seem to be very true to life, and well unlike the majority of the songs on this album it is not a feel good song. It leaves you wondering what the hell is going on with the world around us!
4. LAST BEAUTIFUL GIRL - Seems like something from Armageddon - the last chance before humanity, as we know it changes, the last chance, the last beautiful girl. A much more acoustic song that other great hits like Real World and Angry. This one is one of the longer songs by Matchbox 20, particularly on this album.
5. IF YOUR GONE - Regrets and wishes, hopes and dreams, to late to do anything about it. Slow sad, some might say morbid. But not me, this is one of the greats. This is the one to listen to after an argument with a lover, it makes you realise that things are worth fighting for. That nothing is as bad as it seems. Perhaps the first glamour of honesty in a relationship, in my opinion its about someone just beginning to realise what they’ve lost, but its to late.
6. MAD SEASON - Here we have the origin of the name for the album. This song seems to be something shared between friends, something two close mates would go out and share over a game of pool or something along those lines. This one really is a feel good one, this is the sort of song you can picture those hot lasses kissing men to in the baileys adverts. Possibly some advice man to man, farther to son, mate-to-mate, Friend-to-Friend.
7. REST STOP - This song seems to have no definite structure or verse pattern, with just three verses and no chorus it is one of the shortest ones on the album. This song, whilst not without its charm seems very repetitive, it is one of my least favourites on the album. Still a great tune though
8. THE BURN - Unlike most of the other songs on the album, and the picture of a Hot Tap to accompany the songs lyrics in the inlay of the album sums it up brilliantly. Burn seems to be symbolising love in this one, and this is strangely well picked, as love can burn, and hurt just as scolding hot water can.
9. BENT - Bent has to be the most complicated song on the album, following a scrutinising look at this song and its lyrics, I could find no interpretations or meaning, which is very unusual for this band. However it is a great song and well worth a listen.
10. BED OF LIES - Bed of lies has to be my all time favourite Matchbox 20 song; it seems to sum me up brilliantly along with my feelings about love and the world around us. It’s a song that I feel can be related to by everyone at some point in there life. It’s a moral stand against being betrayed. Learning from your mistakes is the hidden message in this song.
11. LEAVE - A very lifting beginning followed by very harsh lyrics, similar lyrics to the ones found in Gunning Down Romance by Savage Garden. It does however begin to lift again once the chorus sets in. This is a genius use of contrast and power, it makes the song all the more hard hitting and unnerving.
STOP - Well positioned in the album towards the end. This one is a lot faster and a lot more awakening after so many morbid depressing slow melodramatic songs. It is a lot less “oh its all my fault” than the other songs.
YOU WON’T BE MINE - A seemingly weird song with a huge 3 minute pause at the end before a big finally finish. The entire song time is 9.54 and for a song that is well above the average 3 minute song. It is a very powerful and almost operatic song.
New Releases.... The brand new Matchbox Twenty Single "Disease" is out tomorrow (sept 25th) and the upcoming album will be out shortly afterwards, WAHOOOOOO!
Matchbox 20 being so well known in place’s like America can be found on sites such as audiogalxy.com and kazaa.com. May I recommend Real world, angry or Bed Of Lies. Finally I would like to thank you for reading and ask you to leave a comment about my work if it is not of any inconvenience. Once more I would like to thank you again and say happy music hunting, Desolate_Cash

Advantages: Inner meanings make the songs powerful and mysterious. Disadvantages: Lack of new material makes the band less well known, and thus deprives people of glorious music such as this.
