Advantages: More of Hans Zimmer Disadvantages: Unimaginative collection
No doubt, the animated feature was a riot. However, its only after you see the songs listed on a back cover of a CD, is when you notice how Dreamworks went a little lazy on the soundtracks of this movie. Every other B grade inspirational movie ever to hit the market has had Chariot of Fire or What a Wonderful World. Also in this album includes the wilted Hawaii 5-0 score, overplayed Stayin' Alive, and bargain bin Boogie Wonderland.
... ...some obscure or even less heard gems out there. They went straight for the tried and tired.
The only saving garce were the original scores by Hans Zimmer, especially Best Friends. However this only underlines the laziness of Dreamworks in just getting a the most obvious legendary figure in music sondtracks. Its probably an accurate guess that if Hans Zimmer wasn't available, then John Williams would be in there.

Dreamworks certainly didn't spend too much effort trying to find some obscure or even less heard gems out there. They went straight for the tried and tired.

Thankfully, Hans Zimmer saved this OST from tanking. But if just for his couple of songs, your money is better spent elsewhere

Album Notes
Composer: Hans Zimmer. Recording information: Air Lyndhurst, London, England. Soundtracks to animated films generally give composers a chance to indulge their more whimsical side. Such is the case with MADAGASCAR, a movie whose plot revolves around four animals breaking out of the Central Park Zoo and mistakenly ending up in the wilds of Madagascar. Hans Zimmer is the principal composer for the score, though he only ends up flying solo on a pair of tunes--a lush, straightforward remake of "Born Free," and "Zoosters Breakout," a piece dominated by darting string sections and the occasional brass splash. Zimmer is joined by James S. Levine on "Beacon of Liberty," with its mix of orchestral fanfare and a chugging bass line. Joined by Heitor Pereira and Ryeland Allison on "Friends," Zimmer and Levine come up with a whimsical theme that incorporates carefree whistling, a hint of ukulele, and a happy-go-lucky cadence. Familiar old tunes by the Ventures, the Bee Gees, and Earth, Wind & Fire are on hand, but pride of place goes to the hilarious remake of the Reel 2 Reel dance smash "I Like to Move It," rendered by Sacha Baron Cohen (AKA Ali G) in character as King Julian the Lemur.
