Made In Germany - Amon Duul II

Advantages: Good stuff
Disadvantages: Vocals a bit dodgy

Yeti is Amon Duul II's 2nd album, released in 1970, it is surprisingly heavier than the previous more trippy album "Phallus Dei", this album retains the psychedelic sound of the first but several of the tracks have livelier guitar riffs in a mid to late 60s garage style which are then eased by more progressive parts in the vein of Santana. The track Archangels Thunderbid almost borders on all out rock n roll, it's pretty heavy for a bunch of hippies! The female vocals do a good job of sounding haunted or mad but the male's dramatical voice is just an utter row (you'd have thought England had lost 5-1 Germany again the way he's carrying on). A track like "She Came Through the Chimney" sounds like an oriental alien clawing it's way in to your living room with a bag of mosquitoes and a gramophone playing a pre-war time song, it's bizarre ...

Review of Yeti [Remastered] - Amon Duul II

German hippy rock!

Advantages: Very experimental, a big change for the Germans
Disadvantages: A bit too much in the way of operatic vocals

Phallus Dei (God's Penis) was the debut album by early experimental Krautrock band Amon Duul who are often considered as the forefathers of German rock n roll. Experimental they are, particularly for Germans who were a bit behind at this point in the world of rock. This album released in 1969, despite some negatives was a groundbreaking record all the same. 5 tracks only, it consists of 4 short tracks of which the first Kanaan is in my opinion the best - it sounds like The Doors mixed up with a bit of Pink Floyd, the next 3 songs are extremely experimental and have some excellent parts to them but I find the operatic vocals a little bit on the jarring side. The epic title-track Phallus Dei is 25 minutes long and whilst I don't normally enjoy long-winded experimentalism, there is plenty to enjoy in these mind frying minutes and they ...

Angel Made In Heaven

Advantages: Multiple viewing advised to fully appreciate the movie
Disadvantages: Quite a short tale

Having wrapped filming on Trouble In Mind, Alan Rudolph went to work on his next movie. Having been inspired by Divine's performance as someone not in the movie too much, but having a presence across the whole piece. He sought out an unusual character for one of his key players in his next movie Made In Heaven. Divine declined the offer to follow Rudolph into this project having already agreed to work on Hairspray with his old buddy John Waters.
