The final ‘new’ Queen album, although I certainly expect a few more releases of older material before too long. Made In Heaven is everything the Queen fans who monred Fred’s death wanted it to be. It is the most sensitive Queen album in the catalogue with Freddie’s voice particularly touching. Mainly pop songs, and with only five ‘new’ tracks, Made In Heaven has a lot of work to do to win over the traditional Queen fan. Yet, somehow it does it. From the moment that the chords of ‘It’s A Beautiful Day’ strike up, we know this is going to be an album that takes the listener on a rollercoaster of emotions. The title track is, in fact, a Queen version of one of Freddie’s solo tracks, but it is significantly reworked. Another song that gets the same treatment is ‘I Was Born To Love You’ which leaves you feeling giddy by the time it has finished. The most emotional song on the album is ‘Mother Love’ - the last vocal that Freddie layed down. It’s a moody song and took a long time to grow on me, but when it did it blossomed into one of the finest tracks on the album. But not the finest. That honour goes to the upbeat, gospel choir like ‘Let Me Live’ which features a vocal from all three singers in the band. It’s amazing to hear Freddie interrupt Roger’s vocal with his ‘hey’ and ‘yeah’ - ing and makes you think twice about whether Freddie was really in the studio when the track was completed - it works really well. ‘You Don’t Fool Me’ has been remixed over 20 times and still retains its quality - the album version is the best however. ‘A Winters Tale’, the last Freddie Mercury-penned tune is surely the best Christmas Number One, that never quite made it. The album just brims full of brilliant, happy pop-songs. We even forgive Queen for remixing a recent B-side and putting it on the album, although arguably ‘My Life Has Been Saved’ was always too good to be a B-side. The most successful studio album Queen have ever released, number one all over the world, Made In Heaven is a fitting tribute to the greatest performer the music world has ever seen.
