But there’s more to Made in Japan than Smoke. The incredible 20 minutes recreation of Space trucking with the listener hanging from the first note to the last without any loss of strenght and inspiration.
And what to say of “Highway Star” - with Gillan and the rest of the band in state of grace- and the rock blues Lazy –Blackmore’s and Lord’s personal quality control-.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Some rock’n’roll critics credit the origin of what we know today as heavy metal to Black Sabbath, Led Zep and Deep Purple. As it would be downright useless to argue this we’ll take it as a true basis for convenience sake –though I have my own ideas about it-. Whathever, Deep Purple was one of the most influential bands in the history of hard rock, no doubt about it. In my humble opinion the best and probably never unsurpassable period of both quality and power spanned from “In Rock” to “Machine Head” albums. After the last one the band has walked an increasingly declining way. I’m talking of a period that went from 1970 to 1972. Just two years were enough for these guys to put together four classic albums and be credited in The Guiness Book of Records as the loudest band back then –today they’d probably face fiercely competition from Motörhead-. Anyway, Deep Purple is for sure one of the cornerstones of modern rock’n’roll.
MEMBERS
What is reknowned as the best Deep Purples’ lineup comprised five monsters on their respective intrument areas: - John Lord whose organ playing has been a real distinctive mark of the Purple sound. - Ritchie Blackmore, perhaps the most charismatic member of the band. One of those guitarist who’s been able to amount thousands of followers as far as guitar playing. - Ian Gillan, one of my five r’n’r singers of all time. Prodigious voice and fontman power. The kind of once-a-century voice few can achieve. - Ian Paice, super drummer boy. That’s more than enough. - Roger Glover, maybe the real Purple soul. The one who has been present –alongside Paice- in all the band’s reincarnations. Also producer and a solid rhythm basis on which Smoke On The Water boys could built everlasting anthems.

The material from the album came from the three previous masterpieces: “In Rock”, “Fireball” and “Machine Head”. The recording was made during three different gigs in Osaka and Tokyo –two days in the first city and one in the second-. The star of the whole album was for many, of course, Smoke On The Water whose infectious riff means everything for a whole generation –me included-. But there’s more to Made in Japan than Smoke. In 1997 a special Made in Japan 25th Anniversary edition was released with the following tracks:
1. Highway Star 2. Child in Time 3. Smoke on the Water 4. Mule (Drum Solo) 5. Strange Kind of Woman 6. Lazy 7. Space Truckin' 8. Black Night 9. Speed King 10. Lucille
Here in Spain –I cant’t say where else- a double disc reissue of this 25th Anniversary Edition was released with those same tracks plus the remastered studio song versions of the original Made In Japan album. If you can get a copy of any of these two reissues, grab it on the double. No excuses.
FINAL WORDS
As I said before, this is the album I've heard the most so far. I bought it when first released back in ’72 and still spinning on and on. A R’n’R landmark by any standards. If you claim yourself a rocker but happen not to have this in your collection, then you rock as Milli Vanilli. C’mon what are you waiting for. Rush off and get yourself a copy.
Advantages: Extended Jamming, superb musicianship, brilliant songs Disadvantages: Long drum solo
...the time when this was made back in 1972 very few acts had released a live album so this was a major gamble, so if you think about it for an album that came out about 35 years ago to still be regarded as an all time great should give you some idea as to how good an album this is and always was.

Deep Purple took Osaka and Tokyo by storm on three nights in August 1972 - and this CD is living proof of the fact. Remastered for CD with three encores, this set really tears out of the speakers. The band pulled out all the stops and cranked it up to ten throughout, notwithstanding a gruelling flight from England the day before, and vocalist Ian Gillan's recent bout of bronchitis. Moreover, unlike most so-called live albums, what they played on ... ...in from other shows, or faked applause. As you'd expect, most of the tracks sound a bit looser and more improvised than the studio versions, and to be honest, a couple verge on the self-indulgent side. Only the most devoted fan might want to listen to nearly 20 minutes of "Space Truckin'" more than once! But who can resist hearing classics like "Smoke On The Water", "Highway Star", and "Black Night" again in a slightly different form? Ian Paice and ...

Advantages: Good Quality Live Material Disadvantages: Has Aged With Time
Deep Purple's Made In Japan album is a great document to the power of the band live and at thier peak. Once upon a time this album was considered one of the classic live albums of all time but now due to psychedelic influences at the time of making the album this collection seems somehow dated.
Although there is quality material on like 'Highway Star' or 'Smoke On The Water' songs such as the usually brilliant 'Space Truckin' are dragged out to ... ...comes screaming to the fore.
This rerelease features an extra CD containing 'Black Night' and 'Speed King' and a great cover of Little Richard's 'Lucille'.

Advantages: 7 great songs Disadvantages: sometimes hard to hear some lyrics
The CD, Made In Japan is in my opinion the best CD that Deep Purple have released. The tracks are taken from three concerts in August 1972 which took place in Osaka and Tokyo.
The songs on the CD are Highway Star, Child In Time, Smoke On The Water, The Mule, Strange Kind Of Woman, Lazy and Space Truckin'.
For me, the songs are better towards the beginning of the CD although you will never get tired of any of them.
This is a must buy CD for all ...

Spoken of in the same breath as DeepPurple's MadeInJapan or The Who's Live At Leeds, this has long been considered one of the all-time classics of live albums from the early 70's, and indeed, of all time. It is the live album that all Heep live albums are compared to. And deservedly so.
Except for an overlong drum solo (of course, that's what I think of nearly all drum solos!), this is an album with no filler, just straight ahead heavy rock 'n' roll. Of course, there are those who have never liked the Rock 'n' Roll Medley that closes the album, but I've always loved it. It shows what Heep concerts are all about: fun, exciting entertainment.
This album also contains what many consider to be the greatest moment in all of Heepdom - Live 1973's version of Circle Of Hands. Ken Hensley's organ solo on Gypsy just might be the greatest ...

Album Notes
Deep Purple: Ian Gilan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (organ, piano); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded live in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan from August 15-17, 1972. This package contains the original MADE IN JAPAN on one disc, plus one disc of previously unreleased songs from the same shows. Recorded on the Japanese tour of 1972, Deep Purple created the most effortless of great live albums. Labouring under the Machine Head tour and with inter-band relationships that saw both Gillan and Glover feuding with the sometimes difficult Blackmore and quitting the band early the following year, the record, for its part, does not suffer from the personnel inconsistencies, the band playing what would become, in retrospect, a greatest hits set. The consistency of the material - 'Child In Time', 'Strange Kind Of Woman', 'Space Truckin'' - was, and still is, astounding, matched only by the arch standards of Purple's live performance.
