Named after a character in Dickens's 'David Copperfield' UriahHeep released their first album 'Very 'Eavy...Very 'Umble' in 1969 and displayed a very organ and guitar enfused form of rock with even acoustic and jazz elements thrown into the mix for good measure.
There fourteenth album 'Abominog', released in 1982, was the follow-up to their previous showpiece 'Conquest' and only contained one surviving member of the band that recorded it. In fact, Mick Box (guitarist) even considered just ditching the UriahHeep motive and starting afresh with a new group.
However, he didn't, and 'Abominog' was a fairly successful album featuring a change of sound for the band. Now, with Pete Goalby on vocals, John Sinclair on keyboards and two ex-members of Ozzy Osbournes band during the recordings of Ozzy's LP's 'Blizzard of Ozz' and 'Diary ...
MoscowThis is the first album from the current and longest lasting line up in Heep's storied history. It is also one of the most important live recordings in Rock history for the concerts that this album is taken from were the first ever concerts by a Western rock band in the old Soviet Union. Over ten nights, Heep played to 180,000 Russians! (for more details, read the reissue liner notes).
I remember when I first found this on cassette and listened in the car for the first time. It blew me away how well Bernie could handle David Byron's old songs. After listening to this and Spellbinder, I'm convinced that Bernie performs the Byron-era songs better than any other Heep vocalist since David.

The Astoria was originally a Crosse and Blackwell pickle factory. It has since been reincarnated as a music hall, theatre and the live music venue and nightclub it is today. The venue was acquired by the Mean Fiddler group (now part of ClearChannel) in May 2000. Bands to have played on the Astoria's stage include Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Metallica, David Bowie, Oasis, Prince, U2, Eminem and The White Stripes.
