Stephen Fretwell... I have been plugging this guy for a couple of months now and what an album, Having followed a few of his tracks from seeing him as support act for numerous bands its good to see this album finally released. Basically what we have here is going to be classed as folk music but its not, If you like James Blunt but hate the fact you hear it everywhere you go, then this is for you.
we have 13 tracks (2 Bonus UK Tracks)
1. Do You Want To Come With? 6/10 2. What's That You Say Little Girl 6/10 3. Run 8/10 4. Bad Bad You, Bad Bad Me 8/10 5. Rose 7/10 6. Lost Without You 10/10 7. Emily 10/10 8. Lines 9/10 9. Play 9/10 10. Brother 10/10 11. New York 10/10 - Best Track on the Album 12. Rain (UK Bonus Track) 8/10 13. If You Go (UK Bonus Track) 9/10
The first few get off to a slow start but are soulful and easy listening, then he hits you with Rose,, Lost without you and Emily, for me these have to be classic songs of the year, if not the decade, the lyrics are classic and modern and the music flows from verse to verse to keep you coming back for more. New York for me is the track of the album, it means a lot to me, its like he is talking to you and has had the experiences you are going through, imagine someone coming to your living room and writing and singing a song just for you.Every Song here is very original - I cant really pin this guy down to being as similar as anyone as the songs are all very individual and heartfelt. The songs flow well and leave you wanting more.
Some of the lyrics are very thought provoking which i like
We have Bad bad you -------------------------------------------------------------- You look so dainty darlin' crossin' over the road to where the taxis wait in line You move like violence darlin' you're stubborn as they get me everytime -----------------------------------------------------------------
And Emily which I really like ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You never were going to change your mind, were you, Emily? You just sat back, took it all for you, there was nothing for me; I didn't mean to prove that all I can do is lose
Next time that you need me, don't call me up, Emily; I'm tired of your lies and your cheating ways with me; And every time you go, please don't let me know
Emily, you still live inside of me; And, Emily, you are the fire in my tree; So if you should fall, please don't call; And next time you write, I won't stay up all night; 'Cos Emily you, just look at you - you're a tragedy
You never were going to change you mind, were you, Emily? You just sat back, took it all for you, and nothing was there for me; I didn't mean to prove that all I'm good for is to lose
Emily, you still live inside of me; And, Emily, you are the fire in my tree; So next time you fall, please don't call; And next time you write, I won't stay up all night; 'Cos Emily you, just look at you - you're a tragedy
You never were going to change you're mind were you, anyway
All in all this is a 9/10 album if it were not for the few weak tracks a tthe start of the album it would easily get a 10, mind you if you like easy listening rock / Folk then you will love it all the way through. Remeber how long Damien rice stuck around, This is basically doing for Folk what Damien did for easy rock. Buy this now, I promise you will not be dissapointed.
