As the Payne/Elgar Symphony No.3 is not Elgar's definitive statement, Mahler did not ... more
complete a Symphony No.10. However he left "a work fully prepared in the sketch", the complete unorchestrated musical material. Had he lived, Mahler would almost certainly have shaped the material further. This means that the performance edition prepared by Deryck Cooke in the early 60s is not a completion, but an orchestration of the short score left at Mahler's death in 1911. It nevertheless sounds very "complete", both of itself, and as a summation of the romantic-epic 19th Century German musical tradition. Hereafter, the France of Debussy and Ravel would lead the musical world, and Stravinsky's 1913 Parisian premiere of The Rite of Spring would turn it upside-down. Simon Rattle has recorded a fine version with the CBSO. In 1980, Rattle conducted the Symphony No.10 in a highly acclaimed performance with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and this new version with the Berlin Philharmonic offers even greater expressive control and power. The tempos are slightly slower and, inevitably, the performances more musically eloquent. The excellent live sound omits all but the very faintest background noise and the grave beauty of the Finale becomes a deeply moving testament to a world long-since gone. --Gary S. Dalkin

To what influence Mr Cooke had over the final version I do not know, but nonetheless the music sounds like Mahler and is otherwise enchanting .

--- MUSIC ---
It is very hard to describe Mahlers Symphony No. 10. There are drawn out/prolonged periods of heavy and powerful sounds which gradually work up the scale to a concentrated finale, before returning to the undertoned softer music which belies many of the tracks. The music is very intense and very deep. Haunting and cold mostly. To think of Mahler as a genius toward the end of his life writing this only adds to its mystery. In some ways it almost seems twisted in the sense that a battle is raging in sombodies mind. It is very emotive and thought provoking, utilising a lot from the strings in the orchestra, there are also solo performances from many instruments which are superb such as the flute.
--- CONCLUSION ---
You can sample some of this music at various websites before purchasing it, such as Amazon and Naxos. There are many versions played by various orchestra's and in different decades to choose from, the most recent notable one has been Simon Rattle's Berlin orchestra's performance.
Overall if you like Mahler this is a definite buy, if you are new to Mahler get this as part of a compliation package, if new to classical music perhaps sample it before you purchase.
--- AVAILABILITY ---
There are many labels and different recordings of this that is hard to suggest which one to go for. You can buy it stand alone or as a compilation of Mahlers other music. If you are new to Mahler buy a complilation of his other scores too as he has so many other offerings (Symphony No. 1 is one of my favourites). If you have some Mahler music already then I would suggest the Naxos label which has Symphony No. 10 all on its own for around £5.
Advantages: Some Excellent powerful songs Disadvantages: Some songs that I don't understand
around and is looking for stuff then it gets very powerful like he has been spotted and is being chased.
Track 9: O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi – Puccini
From A room With A View
This is another opera, I cant actually place this song or what it is trying to get across. What ever it is trying to show it is a strong one.
Track 10: Adagietto from SymphonyNO.5 – Mahler
From Death in Venice
This is yet another sad song that at the start is extremely quiet and it only gets a bit louder during the end, but it never changes the sombre feeling it gives.
Track: 11 Minuet – Boccherini
From The Lady Killers
This song you could easily sit down to dinner and listen to this as it is a very easy song to listen to that is not giving off to much power so it can be enjoyed by anyone, it has a slight uplifted tone to it.
