Mahler - Symphony No 2 -

Mahler - Symphony No 2 -

This is a very fine, marvellously recorded "Resurrection" symphony with bags to commend ... more

it, even if it fails quite to match market-leaders
such asRattle and Haitink. This massive musical
essay on life and death, love and redemption lends
itself well to the idea of being recorded in
concert, but this performance is a strange
phenomenon. Yes, it was recorded live (in
Dallas)--but on no fewer than four successive days
and then pieced together into the finished item.
The result is in fact more akin to an immaculately
prepared studio recording--there is not quite the
evidence of the type of risk-taking you would
expect in front of a live audience and which can
make or break a Mahler performance. There are
thrilling, gripping and tenderly touching moments,
but many will miss here and there the pointing-up
of the manic, melancholic, melodramatic sides to
Mahler. At times Litton's control and breadth work
well but elsewhere they seem a hindrance. Still,
this is a substantial achievement, blessed with
spacious and yet detailed sound that is as
impressive as the sleeve note on the so-called
"virtual reality recording" process suggests.

MAHLER CREATED THIS ON HOLIDAY - SYMPHONY NO.4

Advantages: Varied movements, esp. 1st and 4th. One of Mahler's most popular works.
Disadvantages: 2nd movement a little weak.

magnificently onto the 4th and final movement which has the addition of a soprano voice. It is at the beginning fast-paced before tailing off into to calm and hopefully leaving you in that state. --- CONCLUSION --- Like so many classical scores these days it can be found very cheaply. In fact I have recently noticed many reductions in prices of classical labels, including HMV's own (down from £4.99 to £2.99 for some very popular classics) and 5 CD's for £20 on the Naxos label. I would consider the first and last movement of Mahler's symphony no.4 to be the most worthwhile, while the middle two utilize parts of both the others, but lack the distinctiveness remaining. Compared to the other Mahler score I have reviewed I personally would place it above that in terms of quality and originality, but there are plenty of places online and offline to ...

GUSTAV MAHLER'S LAST- SYMPHONY NO. 10

Advantages: Embodies some of Mahlers most notable music qualities.
Disadvantages: Unfinished.

--- OVERVIEW --- There is supersition that Beethoven died before completing his 10th symphony and so too would Mahler. This turned out to be true, at the age of 50 Mahler died from a serious illness. The different movements of his symphony were left unfinished and put aside for many years until in the 1960's a British musicoligist Deryck Cooke recreated them. To what influence Mr Cooke had over the final version I do not know, but nonetheless the music sounds like Mahler and is otherwise enchanting . --- MAHLER --- Nationality: Austrian Musical Period: Late-Romantic Born: 1860 Died: 1911 ' To write a symphony is, for me to construct a world' - Mahler Mahler Symphony No. 10 Tracks 01. Three Hammer Blows of Fate Shall Smithe Thee Down!

Advantages: A most powerful and unique work in the annals of music
Disadvantages: Will not appeal to the cutesy-cutesy people

symphonies, the Sixth is also the most classical in terms of form. All the other symphonies (of past and future) contained much more unconventionalities than the Sixth. The First was originally a tone poem turned symphony; no.2 was also more like a very large orchestral and choral symphonic poem; no.3 extended to seven whole movements with a massive choir and soloists to perform roughly five minutes of its 1½-hour length; no.4 featured a solo soprano; no.5 had five movements with progressive tonalities as did no.7 with its two slow movements; no.8 featured unpresedented orchestrations with two full orchestras, three choirs, two children's choirs, soloists, thus earning the name "Symphony of a Thousand"; and no.9 again employed progressive tonalities Mahler so liked to use. No.6 on the other hand features all the traits of the accepted form ...
