“Make Yourself” is the third full length album from a rather great little band called Incubus. Their style is soulful funk-rock with a hint of metal and scratching. Ranging from the trippy uplifting “drive” to the funk soaked mastery of Chris Kilmore with the scratched ... Read review

category populated by Korn, System of a Down, and their other loud and heavy brethren. But that would sell Incubus short, because Make Yourself, the quintet's sophomore album, is a strong progression beyond their 1997 debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. More like Faith No More than Limp Bizkit, Incubus still have that teen-mosh appeal, though the songwriting and instrumentation on Make Yourself is diverse and thoughtful, both lyrically and musically. "Drive" is an easygoing, slightly trippy acoustic-based outing, while oddball scratching (courtesy of DJ Chris Kilmore) and trip-hop funkiness make "Battlestar Scralatchtica" aptly titled. "Nowhere Fast" is vaguely 311-ish with a reggae tinge and lovely melodic interludes, in contrast to the furious intensity of "Out from Under", which gives Make Yourself a surprisingly cohesive diversity that's hard to categorise. Ultimately, singer Brandon Boyd is not a vocal genius, but lyrically and in performance, he's sensitive, charismatic, and unique. Ditto for the 13 cuts that make up Make Yourself. --Katherine Turman

Advantages: Quick, powerful, simple good quality Disadvantages: Lyrics maybe clumsy at times
...repeating, retaining power throughout.
Make Yourself – Title track and the most powerful metal oriented song on the album. Boyd sings and screams of not letting society create him but building himself up to be strong in himself. “So when I make me, I wont be paper-mache . And if I fuck me… I’ll fuck me in my own way.” Very loud, heart felt, great song.
Drive – The single America loved, trippy upbeat very memorable ... ...of his life, takes the wheel and drives.
Clean – Starts slowly with light drumming and builds up beautifully, finds very decent guitar before dipping again, lyrics get fairly clumsy here but pick up well for the resounding body of the track from which it rolls along nicely to it’s natural well timed end.
Battlestar Scralatchtica – Superb instrumental with great scratching that Kilmore does so very well. Great amount of funkiness ...

Have You Made Yourself Review ofMake Yourself (Special Tour Edition) - Incubus (Metal)by
Sarashaw100
Advantages: entertaining and orginal Disadvantages: it ends, you have to buy it, the dj shows off in one track
...Dirk (as bassist). Make Yourself was made in 1999. It has 13 tracks on the album all are very good (except an instrumental which I find very boring). The music on the album is very mixed. It goes from a mild metal like Pardon Me (not heavy like slayer or anything) to acoustic songs like drive. RATING EACH SONG 1: Privilege (3.54) This looks at the hierarchy of life and how unfair it is that some people are born with something and others are not and ... ...This looks at mistakes we make in life and how there will be consequence for everything you do. About how life throws things at you and that if your not careful you will miss something, ‘blink and you miss a beat’. The beat of the song is very jumpy with a heavier chorus. The lyrics of the song are beater than the actual music but it is a very good song. 4: The Warmth (4.25) The song opens with the DJ mixing a tune then softly the guitar ...

MAKE MEEEEEEEEEEEE Review ofMake Yourself (Special Tour Edition) - Incubus (Metal)by
code_kev
Advantages: OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! Disadvantages: some slightly pants songs (well 1)
...start, and some weird sounds, make it sound quite of beat, but it does improve when the singing starts, because then the weird sounds don't sound so out of place! A great song once again. 9/10
When It Comes. OHHh cool indeed. One of those songs with soft verse, and heavy chorus? Sort of! I really nice song indeed, good lyrics, and an enjoyable tune, with some real good bits. 9/10
Stellar. Errrrr not sure about this one, but it does improve alot ... ...never the less. 7/10
Make Yourself. When a cd is named after one song, you have a good idea how good this song must be....AWESOME! It's got an ass kicking rythem, coupled with first class lyrics. It's so well performed, so well made. A storming song (that sounded corny...) 10/10
Drive. Ohhhh nice. Loverly and soft with a nice scrathy feeling.Nice classical guitar sound too. Great lyrics, oh yes. A really enjoyable tune, one of my favs on the cd, ...

Metal Kings Review ofMake Yourself (Special Tour Edition) - Incubus (Metal)by
BJEEE
Advantages: Mellow metal, amazing song writing Disadvantages: #10
It was only recently that I first heard of Incubus. They had a couple of songs put on a bodyboarding video that I received for my birthday. So I took the first chance I had to go out and buy their album, 'Make Yourself', which they released in 1999 on Epic / Immortal Records. One of the tracks on the video, was #12 'Pardon Me'. This remains as one of my favourite song on the CD. It has a little bit of everything. Tempo goes up and down. Bits are ... ...(which they're best known for). This album does contain some very mellow, kind of nice tracks. Compared to their older ablums, 'Fungus Amongus', CD (1995), 'Enjoy Incubus', EP (1997)and 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E', ECD (1997), this ones much softer throughout really. But thats not to say that they've really changed. There are still heavier tracks such as #1, 'Privilege', and #2, 'Nowhere Fast'. This album shows a definite maturity in the bands song writing. ...

Advantages: Original, good lyrics, some excellent songs Disadvantages: Maybe not quite as distinquished as other bands breaking into the UK music industry, such as Papa Roach
...song I downloaded was " Make Yourself " and I was instantly hooked. However to make sure the song was not just a one off hit from the album, I also downloaded " Stellar " which is just as good, if not better then " Make Yourself ".
Within a week I had purcahsed the album, and to be honest from the 12 songs which comprise the album, there is only one, maybe two songs that aren't awesome. " Pardon Me ", " Drive " and " I Miss You " are also worthy ... ...to another group or artist would be a difficult task. Their style and charisma is something owned by no other band and their originality is second to none.
However, dispite the brilliance of this album, it was only really the starting block in my quest to find the best " Rock/Ska " band around. Since hearing Incubus, I have know discovered other bands such as Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Fenix TX, SR71 and Less Then Jake. All of which I believe to have ...
