Make Yourself is the 3rd full length album by Incubus, a 5 piece band hailing from Calabasas in California. Comprised of Brandon Boyd (vocals/diggeridoo), Mike Einziger (guitar), Dirk Lance (bass), Jose Pasillas III (drums) and DJ Kilmore (DJ) Incubus have been together in some form since 1991.
The album itself starts with the pounding and explosive intro to Priviledge a track which ultimately sets the way for the rest of the album to follow, harsh aggresive chords backed up by solid as a rock, funked up bass lines and intoxicating syncopated well crafted drum beats.
The singles released from the album all differ in their individual style further confirming incubus's ability to produce a wider range of music than most of the rock artists currently recording. "Pardon Me" is a track which follows the quiet/loud/quite/loud structure typical of the vast majority of Incubus songs throughout the entirity of their albums, full of funky rhythms and synocopated beats the song is a joy to listen to and creates a fantastic atmosphere. By contrast "Drive" is a song which features an acoustic feel with mellow drum beats and a melodic, calm feel to the tune.
One thing that remains constant throughout all of the songs on the album are the impressive vocal talents of the lead singer, Brandon Boyd, his ability to hold a note perfectly and sing in perfect harmony with the music is very rare within modern acts, both rock and pop. His support of his singing via good technique is also audible and definitely adds the the sonic experience when listening to Incubus, both on CD and live.
To add to the interest of the album, and to set it apart from other similar artists is the use of a variety of percussion instruments such as bongos and congos throughout the album and also the use of the diggeridoo, also played by Mr Boyd. DJ Kilmore also adds to this area with his use of samples and effects to add to the music in places, building the atmosphere and the feeling gained.
Overall this record is absolutely fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone who already likes Incubus or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as anyone interested in chilled out, intoxicating and well written modern rock music.
