This was an excellent present for me though as, having recently watched and absolutely loved the film, I have found myself singing all the songs around the house. Listening to the CD really does bring back that feel good factor I got when I was watching the film.
Just for the few uninitiated people who have not heard of this film, it is a story which is threaded with all the very best of the ABBA songs from the seventies. The very best songs include:
Dancing Queen - sang by Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski as they skip and run dowm to the beach followed by all the women in the village before all leaping in the sea! I loved this song in the film and listening to the three of them sing it has me joining in right from the start! I was very impressed by Meryl Streep's singing when I watched the film and this impression is borne out by the soundtrack!
The above trio also give really fun renditions of Money, Money, Money and Super Trooper. Both of these conjure up really great images from the film especially of the three middle aged women rekindling their pop group days which includes them donning their amazing seventies outfits where they looked like a female version of groups like Sweet!
All the ABBA faithfuls are included - Mamma Mia (Meryl Streep), Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Lilley and Rachel McDowell), SOS (Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep) and Take a Chance on Me (Julie Walters, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski and Philip Michael) to name but a few. As it is the actors from the film singing all of these songs they are not perfect (and let's face it a lot has been said about Pierce Brosnan's singing!) but because it is them it does not seem to matter as it serves to transport you right back to the movie.
My favourite song on the CD is quite a surprising one though because it's one that I don't actually remember ABBA doing. It's called Our Last Summer and is sang by the three main male characters played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skargard. It's a much slower one and the words and melody are absolutely beautiful. The fact that I can picture them lazily singing it on a yacht with the beautiful backdrop of a glistening sea and the island coast only adds to it! It's definitely my favourite!
I already mentioned that this CD was my daughters' choice for my birthday gift and they do seem to have monopolised it a bit. they absolutely love all the songs and are constantly singing and dancing to it all around our living room! I can sing all the words too especially because it comes with a little booklet with all the lyrics!
When I decided that I wanted this CD, my husband suggested getting an ABBA Greatest Hits compilation instead but I told him that that would not be the same. However, if you have not seen the film then I really would not recommend this CD and you would be better off with the originals from ABBA. To me this CD is all about the movie - when I saw it everyone looked like they were all having so much fun and that's the feeling you get when you listen to this CD. I suspect we're going to be playing it a lot in our house!

Advantages: Fun, Catchy, Funny. Disadvantages: A couple of weak songs, and a couple of weak singers.
...great cover. 3. Mamma Mia - Meryl Streep (****)
I'll try my best not to go on about how strong Streep's voice is! But this is another great cover of the original. The title of the film itself, and it accompanies quite a humourous part in the movie itself. Meryl Streep puts so much feeling into every sung word.
4. Dancing Queen - Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski (***)
Everyone knows this song, and so to many Abba fans, i guess it ... ...song, well the whole album, would be murdered. However, i really think they've done it justice, as long as you don't take the whole album too seriously!
5. Our Last Summer - Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, & Stellan Skarsgard (*)
Okay, this is a bit cringeworthy! But like i've just said, this is NOT to be taken seriously. I do tend to skip past this song. Especially the way Colin Firth pronunces 'Sand' as 'Saiind' to almost rhyme with 'rain' and 'remain' ...

Advantages: Perfect sing-a-long tunes with lyrics included!!! Disadvantages: A couple of unfamiliar songs to film fans, but it is still Abba
After seeing the film Mamma Mia all I could do for the next few days was sing the songs and dance around the house, so I had to go out and buy the cd and it has proven to be my favourite cd of the last couple of years. The songs, like the film, are catchy and uplifting. Any Abba fan should be proud that such a great cast managed to sing the tunes with such feeling and power, enough to make this flawless cd. A non-Abba fan myself, I have been converted ... ...about the room to. Any Mamma Mia fan who loved the film will love this cd and not be able to take it out of the player. It promises to help you re-live the film in your car, in the kitchen, in your living room or wherever! And an added bonus that many cds do not have these days is lyrics in the cover sleeve, what more could you want?! ...

Advantages: A tipical musical by hollywood. Disadvantages: Should like the genre.
Mamma mia brought the Abba to the silver screen, introducing up and coming star Amanda Seyfried alongside Marilyn Streep and Pierce Brosnan. THe soundrtrack has been mixed, mastered and produced by the Abba musical geniuses Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaes, and it is a great soundtrack.
Everyone that really love Abba should buy this soundtrack album, that contains songs sung by Amanda Seyfried or the same mamma mia, sung by Marilyn Streep. The same ... ...she sing in pair with Amanda in the song Slipping Through My Fingers.
Many people consider this musical one of the best ever rapresented and they told it is very funny and enjoyable. Music has been considered superb by the reader's comment into a web site I visited, and I do agree with this point of view. I heard the album and I have to admit it is a classical musical, with the typical schemes that always we imagine into a good musical.
All in ...
