Troubled Water", "Danny Boy" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But The Man Comes Around, which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt"), Sting ("I Hung My Head") and Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track--Cash's own "The Man Comes Around", filled with frightening images of Armageddon--the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' "In My Life", you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. --Alanna Nash

‘American IV: The Man Comes Around’ is the last album ever to be released by Johnny Cash in his lifetime.
Johnny Cash typically has a folk/country style to his music. With most of the tracks on this album being ballads, this album continues his trademark genre. Maturity in age has given him an interesting and magnificent: deep, unsteady, gravely and meaningful voice. The ballads are complimented by the use of bass and acoustic guitars. These are the main musical instruments used throughout all the tracks on this album.
The album is a combination of ‘cover tracks’ and those that Johnny Cash has written himself. The tracks chosen for this album are mostly deep meaningful songs. Many have mild – blatant religious overtones and most of them are profoundly depressing. Johnny Cash’s voice singing the lyrics over guitars enhances the meaning and intensity of the songs.
This album holds much personal significance, as Johnny Cash knew he was going to die when he created this album.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some of the tracks that stand out particularly for me are,
The man comes around This is about ‘judgment day’; there is a hugely religious aspect to this song. ‘There’s a man coming round taking names and he’ll decide who to free and who to blame’ ‘The man comes around’ is full of energy and appears to be very upbeat. The combination of religious overtones taken from the New Testament (Revelations): and the unrelenting repetitiveness of the acoustic and bass guitar: has an overwhelming apocalyptic feel. This is one of my favorite tracks, although upbeat, it has very significant and profound lyrics. It is deeply saddening or perhaps reassuring, depending on the listener. Cash’s usual unsteady voice takes on an untypical strength and confidence. -
Hurt ‘Trent Reznor’ from ‘Nine Inch Nails’ originally wrote the song ‘Hurt’. It is one of reflection and in some way an evaluation of life. ‘Every one I know goes away in the end’ ‘Hurt’ is a slow, powerful and emotional balled; the intensity increases as Cash questions the value of his life. The music is played on guitar; accompanied by piano. The lyrics have religious references and are somewhat complicated; it is a track that Johnny Cash has been quoted to say he can relate too. There is discordance within the music; this reflects the darkness and despair of the lyrics. The overall effect of this song; is very sad and extraordinarily emotional. This is my favorite track.
-
Bridge over troubled water Simon and Garfunkell originally wrote the song ‘Bridge over troubled water’. This is about someone offering his or her support and comfort to someone going through difficult times. ‘Like a bridge over troubled water, I will ease your mind’ ‘Like a bridge over troubled water’ is a very slow soothing ballad, sang to stunning music; played on an acoustic guitar and keyboard. The effect of this song is lovely; the lyrics are poetic and beautiful; it has very soothing and reassuring effect.
-
Give my love to rose This is about someone stumbling across a dying man; the dying man is ultimately making his last requests. ‘tell my boy that daddy is so proud of him; and don’t forget to give my love to rose’. ‘Give my love to rose’ is a slow balled; with simple repetitive beautiful music, played on an acoustic and a bass guitar. The vowels are sang long and drawn out; and the pitch increases as the dying man pleads; this heightens the evocativeness. This is a typical country and western sentimental song that is supposed to ‘tug at your heart strings’. This is my least favorite track; I find it too obsequious, drawn out and just too ‘country’.
-
Danny Boy This is about a women reminiscing; a friend of hers loved a boy called ‘Danny’ and had to tell him that he was being ‘called up’ to go to war for Ireland. ‘oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, the pipes the pipes are calling’ ‘Danny Boy’ is a traditional song. It starts with Johnny Cash’s distinctive voice, telling the story behind Danny Boy. This ballad is accompanied by music played on the acoustic guitar and I think: clarinet. The song gives us an insight into how it must feel to have a loved one be called up to fight in a war; highlighting the uncertainty of whether or not they will return. It is a very thought provoking emotional song. ‘Danny Boy’ is a track that has been covered in the past by several artists; Johnny Cash performed it excellently.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The feeling of this album is one of powerful sadness; this is compounded by the knowledge that Johnny Cash knew he was going to die when he made this album. The hairs will stand up on the back of your neck and you will be on the verge of tears; such is the power of this album I would have and still do say that I incalculably detest country music, however I love this album and I have discovered a immense respect for Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash is a league of his own; he has the ability to take songs that have been sung and re sung to death: and he has put meaning, power and splendor back into them. Although there are rouge tracks, that I dislike and consider too ‘country’ for my taste; overall I feel this is a timeless emotional album, which provides us with some amazing unusual tracks: enhanced by Johnny Cash’s extraordinary voice.

Johnny Cash died at 1 am September 12th 2003. May He rest In Peace.

...THE TRACKS
--------------------
1. The Man Comes Around
"And I heard as it were, the noise of thunder and one of the four beasts saying "come and see". And I saw. And behold: a white horse", so starts this first track of this fabulous album. It's a song about dying and reaching the gates of Heaven. References to golden ladders and thornbushes add to the apocolyptical theme. An acoustic guitar and bass are the only other instruments - aside from ... ...how a 73 year old man can reach both up and down to some notes. A morbid cello moans away in the background and Cash serenades his way through the first love song on this album. Of course, he would prefer to refer to it as an ode!
7. Personal Jesus
This is fab! It's the Depeche Mode tune done in a really different and unique way. Essentially all the ingredients that made the song great in the first place are still here: the nagging guitar motif, ...

Opening with "The Man Comes Around" based on the book of revelation which has some superb guitar playing by Randy Scruggs and Smokey Hormel accompanied by Benmount trench on Piano and organ. Then onto the now infamous version of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" whereas the Nine Inch Nails version was about hurting yourself cause you are young and frustrated, this is more about being old and on deaths door, I like both versions. "Give My Love To Rose" ... ...a cheery number about a man awaiting the gallows reflecting on his crime, but then country music never was the most cheery of genres, and it is simply a brilliant song (I will now have to wash out my keyboard with soap and water).
Another beautiful song follows and that is "The First Time ever I saw Your Face" again this is simply superb and full of atmosphere; I challenge you to listen to this and not be moved. Now we have had a Nine Inch Nails ...

...the last that the infamous Man in Black made, it is a great album to listen to to acheive an eery depressing mood which I sometimes find very reassuring.
The songs are sang knowing that soon he will die this brings a new poiniency to all of the tracks which tackle the subject of death and make 'Hurt' the star track with the lyrics gaining new meaning from when Trent from NIN sang it.

Advantages: Inspirational, soulful... definitely a must have. Disadvantages: None.
If you purchase only 1 Johnny Cash cd... let it be this one.
I grew up on Johnny Cash... my mum's favourite singer... unfortunately, like all teens, I turned my back on my mum's style of music and embraced bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Sting... etc... etc...
And then... last year... I heard the song HURT on the radio. I was touched, my heart ached from all the sadness and desperation that poured from that ... ...many, many years. I'll admit, I purchased the cd for that song alone... shame on me once again for underestimating Johnny Cash's enormous talent.
I had forgotten just how powerful a presence Johnny Cash was, how extraordinary his voice was... he is truly legendary.
This cd is loaded choc-a-bloc with Cash's greatest ballads, from the heart-wrenching HURT to the comedic PERSONAL JESUS. This cd will make you smile, but it will also make you sad because ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Man Comes Around, The (American IV) - Johnny Cash"
Advantages: Consistently high quality throughout album Disadvantages: Not one for when you need cheering up!
It's probably worth starting this review by saying that I am in no way a JohnnyCash fan, and that this is the only album of his that I own.(In a
collection that tends to steer well clear of anything that could be labelled 'country' music.)
I'll come on to the reasons for my owning this album later, but first, a little about the man himself.
JC
Born in Kingsland, Arkansas, Cash sold over 90 million (90!) albums in a music career that spanned 6 decades. It's safe to say that his music, particularly later in his career, was largely downbeat, focusing on sorrow and moral issues. Cash was nicknamed the 'Man in Black', not because of a resemblance to Will Smith, but because he chose to wear dark clothing that became synonymous with his act.
Notable records include the legendary 'Ring of Fire', and Cash famously played inside San ...
Advantages: Play - When you're weary and feeling small... Disadvantages: Don't Play - When you're with your skater buddies.
This fabulous album was robbed of being the last throw by the late, great JohnnyCash by the dodgy decision to release American V, a wholly lesser album.
So If you have no other Cash recording in your collection you must get this one. It's the voice of a reformed hell-raiser, drug addict and truly God-fearing man on the brink of final personal oblivion. It's difficult to tell when the tremble in his voice is emotion and when it's simple frailty. I like to believe it's the one caused by the other.
Stand-out tracks - The monumental "Hurt" is the show-stopper here, made more emotional by the realisation that Cash is singing with first-hand experience of the subject matter.
The cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is a close second for track of the album. Succinct and direct acoustic guitar backing pushes the song along nicely ...
Advantages: Look it is JOHNNY CASH MAN Disadvantages: none with John at all
spiritual really like "Lucky Old Sun (Rolls Around Heaven All Day)" the addition of a piano to the arrangement adds a somber tone to this very reflective gospel type number.
Humor is also represented here albeit in a fairly dark and somber way with a version of Egbert Williams "Nobody" as ever with a simple arrangement of acoustic guitar and piano, all done with a very somber tongue rammed into his cheek.
One of the highlights of this album has to be "Field of Diamonds" a duet with June Carter Cash, they sing together beautifully on this number and as is expected for this album the arrangement of Guitar, organ and piano is kept simple.
Few artists can say that their last four albums wiped out their entire back catalog in terms of quality, but JohnnyCash can. Of these 4 albums (American Recordings, Unchained, Solitary and The ManComes ...

"Give My Love To Rose" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. AMERICAN IV: THE MAN COMES AROUND was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume. Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode "Personal Jesus" and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickiness to fully appreciate the power of Cash's soul-baring interpretations. He brings an equal amount of gravitas to old country and folk tunes like "Streets of Laredo" and "Give My Love to Rose." To hear Cash's worn, husky, lived-in voice inhabit the world-weary narrative of the Beatles' "In My Life" and the graphic, almost spiritual romance of the Ewan MacColl-penned ballad "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is to be led directly to the heart of these songs' deepest meanings.

Entertainment Weekly (9/26/03, p.34) - "...Cash stares down death here, yet when the man comes around, you have little choice but to go....It's a blunt, unsentimental farewell from a man who made a life and art from never flinching."
