Advantages: Play - When you're weary and feeling small... Disadvantages: Don't Play - When you're with your skater buddies.
This fabulous album was robbed of being the last throw by the late, great JohnnyCash by the dodgy decision to release American V, a wholly lesser album.
So If you have no other Cash recording in your collection you must get this one. It's the voice of a reformed hell-raiser, drug addict and truly God-fearing man on the brink of final personal oblivion. It's difficult to tell when the tremble in his voice is emotion and when it's simple frailty. I like to believe it's the one caused by the other.
Stand-out tracks - The monumental "Hurt" is the show-stopper here, made more emotional by the realisation that Cash is singing with first-hand experience of the subject matter.
The cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is a close second for track of the album. Succinct and direct acoustic guitar backing pushes the song along nicely ...
Advantages: It's Johnny Cash! What more do you what? Disadvantages: How can there be any? It's Johnny Cash!
The best of JohnnyCash is just one of many, many albums that you can get by The ManInBlack.
It is released by Spectrum music which is a division of Polygram records.
Before you start reading this, open another window turn up the volume and pop along to Johnnycash.com this will give you an idea of the great man, not all songs that you will be treated too are on this album but you will be treated none the less. If you don't like Johnnycash, can you say you have really listened?
JohnnyCash is in most peoples eyes a country and western singer but he is so much more than that and has in the past been labelled with titles including a popular artist, a folk singer, a rockabilly and a mixture of all.
In his youth he went for singing lessons but after a few lessons was told not to come back and not to change a thing, this is ...
Advantages: Johnny Cash's voice + powerful tracks. Disadvantages: The odd very 'country' track.

?American IV: The Man Comes Around? is the last album ever to be released by JohnnyCashin his lifetime.
JohnnyCash typically has a folk/country style to his music. With most of the tracks on this album being ballads, this album continues his trademark genre. Maturity in age has given him an interesting and magnificent: deep, unsteady, gravely and meaningful voice.
The ballads are complimented by ...

This 5 disc set comes in a 12" x 12" box. Also included is a 40-page booklet with photos, session notes, and an essay by Colin Escott. German version digitally remastered. This five-disc set includes almost every single and album track Johnny Cash released between 1959 and 1962 (Bear Family has omitted Cash's concept albums from this period, collecting them instead on the 4-disc COME ALONG AND RIDE THIS TRAIN). These were transitional years for Cash, as his sound evolved from the spare, electric style he perfected at Sun Records to a more acoustic-based folk style. These were also troubled years for the star, during which Cash became addicted to amphetamines (partially in response to his work schedule, which included not only recording but also acting and 300 live performances a year). The effects of the drugs are evident on the later tracks, where a hoarseness and quavering is detectable in Cash's vocals. THE MAN IN BLACK 1959-1962 also contains more than a dozen previously unreleased tracks and an entire disc devoted to a 1960 recording session. This beautifully packaged and extensively annotated box set is a must for Johnny Cash completists and for hard-core fans of classic country.
