..., Cohen's old friend Jennifer Warnes helps out on vocals as well. The final verse is typical Cohen bringing together the profane and profound, needing no excuse for his love because "it's written in the scriptures.
The third song is a more socially aware critique. "Everybody Knows" deals with the AIDS epidemic - then at its shocking early height - and wealth/poverty as well as with personal issues. For Cohen the personal and the political have always mingled. The line:
"everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
without your clothes
and everybody knows"
alone makes it worth buying this!
So to the title track. "I'm Your Man" is a career-defining moment of, a mission statement of someone who has always been scathingly honest with and about himself. The chorus is a sincere yet amusing...

...in an arena where workmen are walking about setting things up. Then the arriving audience is split-screened with some nice lead playing from Paul.

This is a love song for Heather. They discuss how it came to be written as the song plays and there are shots of them on their private plane. About half way through the song we get the full strength of this love song. It’s belted out and yet pretty too.

The original video footage of this song was filmed in France. A young and handsome Paul McCartney in the sixties goofs around on his own. That’s the footage they use here, projected up on big screens as Paul sits at his brightly coloured Magical Mystery Tour piano to play. The synths reproduce the flutes. Advantages: Some fantastic songs that benefitted from a live atmosphere. Disadvantages: Some tracks didn't work vocally, a little Beatle bias.
...You would have to have lived in a cave over the past forty odd years not to have heard of Paul McCartney; in spite of his now ex-wife's original claim that she'd never heard of the fab four before she met the man himself (yeah, right), most people left on the planet may wish to rekindle memories of years gone by, or even discover them for the first time.
The purpose of the Paul McCartney 'Back in the World' Live CD was obviously to take the joy of seeing the ex-Beatle live into the home of many more people who may not be able to folk out £50 to £60 for a concert ticket. This two disk set, as it conveniently points out on the front, contains 36 tracks by the man himself, chronicling his time in the world's biggest band ever to his time in Wings and even his extensive solo career.
