Ok, you may have read my other cd reviews, and you can see I'm a metal fan, but I also like the softer stuff, so I guess it's fitting reviewing this fine cd, because it has some really nice relaxing songs on it. The usual song by song thing I like too do!
Writing To Reach You. A really nice and relaxing song, well sung, it all sort of flows together in a really cool way. The Instruments sound strange but really suit the song down too a tee. It's slo, and melodic. I like it. 9/10
The Fear. Very different to the last, sounds jazzy and relaxed as hell. With soft washed out singing, and slow beat. It's a relaxing song, with a very nice chorus, well song too, but a bit bland in places. Nice lyrics 8/10
As you Are. Once again, really darn relaxing and slow, good to "cill" too. It's the normal travis stuff, good. Sounds a bit bland though. 7/10
Driftwood. The one everyone has heard, it deserved to do well, mainly becasue it's a thousand times better then any song by a dull pre fab band. Really great tune, good lyrics, a song I seem to get lost in, I just love the tune. 10/10
The Last Laugh of the Laughter. Not sure about this one, not really that good in places, but the peak of the song is nice. Not as good as the previous one, but it gets better 2.23 seconds in (ish). 7.5/10
Turn. Once again one of thier bigger songs, and quite a corker it is too, great tune, and lyrics that go so well with it. A darn enjoyable tune. 9/10
Why Does it Always Rain ON Me. Another of their bigger songs, once again great tune blah blah... 9/10
Luv. Sounds like some of the other songs, with the strumming at the start, not really great, but it's there so errrrr it's ok I guess. 6/10
She's So Strange. Really soft song, nice and relaxing again. Quite a mellow number, even by Travis's standards, but I really enjoyed it, it made me feel so......un tense. :) lol. It's nice (darn I'm saying "nice" and "cool" way too much...) 8/10
Slide Show. A really soft tune, nice lyrics, and the guitar strumming suits the mood perfectly for the song. At around 65% in another song starts, and a darn good one too! It's quite Beatles sounding (in my op, hehe), sounds really cool, one of the best on the cd. Darn cracker of a song, it's really fast for a Travis song! Not relaxing, but it rocks quite a bit.
So overall it's a good cd, some average songs but nothing really bad. As a cd I'd give it 8/10, I would hacve given it more if there were no duff songs. It's clear thast Travis can only get better. If you like this, try the amazingly fantastic Sterophonics cd "performance and cocktails", or a Radiohead cd like "the bends". Both great cds, like this one. Buy it.

Advantages: Excellent album, that has a very wide appeal. Some excellent singles and superb album tracks Disadvantages: It's perhaps too good that they raised the expectation too high for the rest of their albums
