When A Man Loves A Woman - The Demon Drink

Advantages: A wonderfully touching story
Disadvantages: A little overacted at times

Set against a backdrop of near-idyllic family life, Michael Green (Andy Garcia) is a successful airline pilot who has married Alice (Meg Ryan), the woman of his dreams and taken on her oldest daughter as his own. They also have a younger daughter together and things seem to be all rosy. However, the pressures of work and motherhood are starting to tell on Alice and she turns to drink in order to cope. As her dependency on alcohol grows, she develops more and more cunning ways to hide it, feigning illness and exhaustion to disguise her often incoherent state. Things come to a head one day when she has an accident in the shower and ends up in hospital; it is only now that she has to face the fact that she has become an alcoholic. The film follows the family as they struggle to cope with her addiction. Alice learns a lot about ...

When a man really loves his wife

Advantages: brilliant performance, great story
Disadvantages: none

After a tiring day it is refreshment watching a romantic comedy but there are evenings when I need some more touching films. Yesterday I watched When A Man Loves A Woman. It is a drama about a family and although there are several other characters in the film the focus is on this family. The film was directed by Luis Mandoki. He is a Mexican film director, his most famous films are El Secreto, Message in a Bottle and Angel Eyes. The classification of When A Man Loves A Woman is 15 years and over as it is about handling alcoholism. The film lasts for two hours and is very gripping there is always a twist in the story you wanted to watch. Although the film was made in 1994 it is still very up to date or probably even more relevant. A lot of families are in these shoes whether they admit it or not. This film shows that alcoholism can be ...

Pretty Woman

Advantages: Great story, shopping, characters
Disadvantages: None

and a bit skanky, no but then this is Hollywood! Edward is not the kind of man to pick up hookers, he is just a no nonsense business man who wants things done now and cannot be bothered with attachments of the female kind. However, he soon becomes enamoured with Vivian. I think the reason why he falls for her is that she is the first woman he has met that does not seem in awe of him or his job and will tell him exactly what she thinks. Edward as we know is played by Richard Gere, he has that suave, sophisticated look about him in this movie and although he is not my type he still looks quite cute and you could imagine yourself falling for him. The film is mostly set in Beverly Hills and so we see the nice side of LA and Hollywood, not the seedy side that Viv is used to working in. Some of my favourite scenes are the ones where Edward gives her ...
