already a platinum pop Cinderella by the time of this 1992 music video project. Her career's exclusive reliance on meticulously groomed studio recordings and equally polished video clips invited critical scepticism, if not scorn, making this concert debut on camera a risky career move. As it happened, it was triumphant: coming on the heels of her manicured albums, the girlish charm and heart-stopping vocal pyrotechnics displayed onUnpluggedconfirmed Carey's talents, while also delivering the freshest music she had made up to that point. Modifying the series' original acoustic format, Carey reinforces her octave-leaping vocal prowess with a crack (and frequently very plugged-in) band, a string section and a muscular vocal chorus. But the star herself is clearly live, not Memorex, as she vaults from her husky lower register to those signature, stratospheric head tones that would normally be possible only through judicious application of helium. Earlier hits, including "Emotions", "Vision of Love" and "Make It Happen", come across more like heartfelt (if somewhat routine) personal testaments than the technical showcases they seem on record, where every on-a-dime vocal swoop, leap or pirouette can suggest a deliberate obstacle placed there to demonstrate Carey's chops. When she tucks into Michael Jackson's "I'll Be There", however, there's little room left for quibbling. Carey's lush, melismatic delivery blossoms in this richer emotional soil, andher duet partner, Trey Lorenz (who would go on to a successful solo career, catapulted by this performance), matches her in fervour. Even Carey's detractors can be humbled by this track, while her fans will relish the whole program, augmented on home video with three contemporaneous video clips. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

multi-platinum-selling artist who owned the charts, but didn't command much respect because no one had ever seen her perform live. As it turned out, Miss Thing could deliver as sure as Domino's, emoting significantly over soulful arrangements of several hits and a cover of the Jackson Five's "I'll Be There." That track became a No. 1 hit and earned a solo recording deal for featured backup singer Trey Lorenz. This may not be Carey's best record, but it's certainly her most surprising.--Daniel Durchholz

I have been a fan of Mariah Carey for many years my first record was her debut single "Vision of Love" which i got when i was 3.
I have always liked the way every track on her albums seemed to have been recorded with 100% of her effort.
When buying a Mariah cd you always get alot of tracks on the album, and the qulity of her voice is outstanding, when i saw that MTV Unplugged had released the cd of her live performance that she did for MTV's Unplugged series i thought i was going to get my "moneys worth" so to speak. However i was dissapointed when i saw there was only 7 tracks on the album, compared to the 13 or so you would normally get on one of her cd's, however i bought it anyway and decided to give it the benifit of the doubt and give it a try
The quality of her voice is as outstanding as ever, you wouldnt know that it was a live recording without having to listen closely, and you get the feeling that she gave 100% to each and every song on the album, however it still doesnt take away the fact that there is only 7 tracks on the album, half of what you would normally expect.
Being a huge fan i went and bought the video of the performance and sure enough she gives 100% to each performance, but again there is only 7 tracks: Emotions If It's Over Someday Vision of Love Make it Happen I'll be There Can't Let Go However there was bonus footage on the video which includes 5 music videos, a interview and behind the scenes footage of Mariahs home movies, which makes up for the lack of tracks.
MAKING THE DESCISION: THE CD i personally wouldnt buy the MTV Unplugged cd unless you havent heard Mariah sing live or are a hardcore fan, i still have my copy as i collect anything Mariah but i admit to only listening to it once this year. I personally believe that they should have added a interview and more songs. THE VIDEO I recomend buying the MTV Unplugged video as you get alot more for your money 7 live tracks, 5 music videos, a interview and home movies, i watch my MTV Unplugged video alot, i watch it by myself, with my friends or with my family, it is good entertainment and very good quaility recordings.

Album Notes

Saturday Night Live Horns: George Young (alto saxophone); Lenny Pickett (tenor saxophone); Lew Delgatto (baritone saxophone); Earl Gardner (trumpet); Steve Turre (trombone). Recorded live at Kaufman Astoria Studios, New York on March 16, 1992. Recorded live for MTV's "Unplugged" program, this acoustic 1992 concert bears witness to Mariah's fantastic performance skills. Equipped with her astoundingly powerful, lovely pipes, Mariah pulls #1 singles and b-sides out of the studio bag and makes live magic of them. Particularly on the numbers with a gospel chorus behind her, it's clear during at even the poppiest moments that this woman testifies when she picks up the mic, with echoes of divas like Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson in her riveting vibratos. Surely another part of what enlivens concerts like this one so much is the fact that Mariah helped pen all but one song - The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There." Backed by a dynamic band and the heartthrob Trey Lorenz, Mariah lights this classic ablaze with feeling, further affirming her love for her roots while staying true to her own vocal personality. "If It's Over," co-written by Carole King, takes a more traditional R&B turn with the brassy groove of the Saturday Night Live Horns, while the hit "Vision Of Love" is just plain rapturous.
