I AM WHATEVER YOU SAY I AM, IF I WASNT THEN WHY WOULD I SAY I AM, IN THE PAPER THE NEWS EVERY DAY I AM, RADIO WON'T EVEN PLAY MY JAM.
No points for guessing that Eminem (aka Marshal Mathers) wrote this song about the way in which people view him and oh boy, do people view him! From the kids that idolise his rapping to the women's rights protesters who claim that he is sick and disgusting, Eminem is kicking up a storm wherever he goes!
The Marshal Mathers Lp is the follow up to The Slim Shady LP. Slim Shady is Eminem's alter ego, the one that swears and cuses and just dosen't give a ****!!!It's a little bit like a young child having an imaginary friend and blaming him it for their naughtiness!!!
I personally don't get what all the bad press is about Eminem, infact I think that he is a very very clever young man. He raps about issues that are relevent today particulary about the state of society. If the critics listened carefully to his lyrics then they would realise that there is an awful lot of sarcasm and irony in there. OK, he has rapped about terrible things such as rape and abuse but in his own clever way he is trying to point out to people that this is discraceful but its time that they opened their eyes and realised that this is going on in the world. Take for instance track 6 on The Marshal Mathers cd referring to middle class youths going off the rails, I actually interpreted it as the class shootings in America because he makes reference to it earlier.
"Middle America now it's a tragedy , now it's so sad to see, another class city having this problem, and they blame it on Maralyn and the heroin, where where the parents at? And now look where its at".
Eminem has an infectuous style of rapping and the only thing that I can fault him on is his continual swearing. I don't think that this is neccesary as when played on day time radio half of the lyrics are beeped out anyway! However, the CD does carry a parent advisory sticker saying that bad language is on the CD.
I would say that this CD is better than his last one, although I do like both of them. His voice makes me laugh and some of his raps, especially the real slim shady are very comical. Other good tracks include Remember me and ofcourse Stan. Stan tells the story of an obsessed fan who takes Eminems rapping seriously. Eminem explains in character in this song that he shouldn't be taken so seriously and that he says most of his stuff just messing around.
OK, so Eminem you either love him or hate! If you love him then you're gonna love this CD. It has been released since last summer now so I should imagine that it has been reduced to around £9.99 in most shops although I bought it for £12.99 when it was first released.
I personaally think that Eminem is a very clever artist who has chosen to rap about contrevertial things that are usually taboo subjects in order to get the reaction that he has got which all makes money in the bank for him!

I love Eminem too, especially this album & agree with your review. Critics just don't see past the swearing, but there's lots of excellent stuff in his work & great intelligence & wit.

Superb opinion focussing on the most ignored aspect of Eminem; his marketing genius. Very interesting read, well done!

Well written op. You know I like Eminem. When I was a teenager I was mad about Alice Cooper and he attracted similar press attention. He used to chop baby dolls heads off while singing a song called Dead Babies. Parents were in uproar thinkin he was going to corrupt their children, but as you know, I turned out OK didn't I!!!!!!!
