The generic title ofMartha - Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurencesuggests a bland, ... more
by-the-numbers romantic comedy. Its dialogue certainly doesn't help--there's a lot of piffle about destiny and "having only one chance", etc.--but there are some surprising differences. The plot centres around Martha (Monica Potter), an American trying to start a new life in London. She meets three men (Tom Hollander, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes, who played the title role inShakespeare in Love). These three are best friends and all three fall in love with her but the one she falls in love with feels like he's betraying the others to be with her. Despite the resulting confusion, she pursues him to the end--which makes it unlike most current romantic comedies where the woman is a hapless love object to be captured by the right guy. But more entertainingly,Martha - Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurencepays particular attention to the ways men delude themselves because the two friends Martha doesn't care for are both convinced she's hankering for them, which allows for some fairly subtle skewering of the male ego. It's a flimsy movie but no more so thanNotting Hilland Joseph Fiennes, in particular, has a relaxed, winning charm that marks him as a rising star.--Bret Fetzer

Advantages: some funny scenes and a great Ray Winstone cameo Disadvantages: the central characters are far too shallow
in the UK, this may have something to do with the fact that he reserves her a room at a top hotel.
Martha, having met Daniel, goes onto meetLaurence (Joseph Fiennes) at the airport, they hit it off also (funny that, isn't it?) and he ends up giving her a lift back to the swanky hotel Daniel has reserved. One thing leads to another and they end up really liking eachother and planning another meeting.
Then MarthameetsFrank (Rufus Sewel) who is another annoying stereotype of an out of work actor. Frank and Martha do not share the flirting that Martha and Daniel did, nor the sweetness that Martha and Laurence did, but for some bizarre reason she likes him too.
So they all like Martha and she likes them. Martha finds out that she has played them off against oneanother, and is disgusted with the way they all fight for her like a toy ...
Advantages: Hilariously funny Disadvantages: Not one to watch with your boyfriend!
An hilarious film which took me by surprise.
I first saw this in the cinema and have watched and watched it many times since.
Not an incredibly famous cast, nor an unpredictable storyline, but this film has that 'something' that draws you back to it time and again.
'One for the girls', this is a romantic and funny tale of the day that three blokey friends, independently meet and fall for the same girl, without each other or the girl realising the link.
I won't spoil it for you by telling any more. Order a pizza, get the girls round, and hire the video for a fantastic 'girls night in'. ...
Advantages: Romantic, funny, Joseph Fiennes Disadvantages: TOO coincidental???
"MarthaMeetDaniel, Frank and Lawrence" is the story of three friends who find their lives become more than a little complicated when an American girl becomes entangled with all of them in some way or another.
The story begins with Lawrence (the gorgeous Joseph Fiennes) leaving his flat early in the morning and knocking on the door of one of his neighbours. He has never met the neighbour (Ray Winstone) before but apparently the bloke is a psychiatrist. He wants to talk about his problems. About his friends. And about betrayal . . .
Martha (the Julia Roberts-esque Monica Potter) is sick of her life and decides to up sticks and head for Britain. She has hardly any money on her but, then again, she has just decided to move completely on impulse. While at the airport, she runs into Daniel (the tiny imp-like Tom Hollander), a topnotch ...
