Martha Wainwright is a talented and noteworthy singer and songwriter, especially when she really lets go as on signature track "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" and the lovely ballad "These Flowers".

daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus, and appearances on his albums, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole earlier this year. The EP garnered rave reviews: The Times called it a "tour de force" while The New York Times named it "a gorgeous teaser" to her forthcoming full-length debut. The release of this self-titled debut album takes things to a whole new level. An album of contrasts, Martha Wainwright features tracks filled with raw, fiery, passionate energy alongside unforgettable, hauntingly beautiful ballads. --C Wingbaps
world since she was born. She posses a voice with timbres similar to her brother, Rufus, and to her mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. She also has a way of stretching syllables out for reasons at once musical and textual, very much like her father, Loudon Wainwright, from whom she's also inherited a bold autobiographical stance, albeit couched in her own particular poetics. A bracing confidence informs these thirteen songs, from the bright shiny pop of "G.P.T." and "The Maker" (with the unmistakable voice of Rufus on backup vocals) to the fragile balladry of "Whither Must I Wander." Martha Wainwright continues the family tradition of audacious debuts. -- David Greenberger

It's all about the voice! Review ofMartha Wainwright (Special Edition) - Martha Wainwrightby

Advantages: A truly spectacular voice. Disadvantages: One or two weaker songs.
Martha Wainwright's self-titled 2005 debut album is, in the words of Beth Orton, "Truly amazing." Daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, she is pure musical pedigree. She has no doubt been influenced by such a strong musical background and though she manages to combine all the best elements from these commanding figures, she does so in a way that is completely her own. As Uncut magazine said of her ... ...song eases in in typical Martha style - just acoustic guitar and vocals with the rest of the band kicking in on the third line. The lyrics, as ever, display a stark honesty carried by Martha's smoky, sandpaper vocals, a no-holds barred narrative of drunken desire. One of the more notable songs on the album is that of 'Factory'. At first listen one is easily carried away by the breezy, melodic guitar riffs, it is only on closer inspection that the ...
