album (as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton). Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. Not that these are short songs; this eight-song album clocks in at over an hour, which makes it all the more impressive that not one moment on this recording is boring. In tackling various approaches to their subject, Metallica is insightful lyrically as well as musically: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is from the point of view of an institutionalised inmate and "Disposable Heroes" is the perspective of a soldier. --Genevieve Williams

Advantages: probably the best metallica album ever Disadvantages: none that i can see
...songs. the album is a master peice and i belive it is the best alround metallica album. it was first released in feburary 1986 and only reached 29th in the charts but this is not an indication of how good the album is.most of the songs are influenced by war mainly WW1. the album contains the tracks

overall the album has no dissapointing features like so many other metallica albums (especially the post 1991 ones) its the first time the vocal and instrumental were a the same level
Advantages: Very deep lyrics Disadvantages: Last album with Cliff Burton
I think that this song is the most immense and powerful song I have ever heard. The song details what I can only see as some kind of assault and uses extremely immense lyrics to show this. The riff continues throughout the song with a couple of solos to make this song truly epic. An amazing opening track that can be listened to over and over and the lyrics never fail to stick in your head.
Master of Puppets- 8:35
This track opens with an amazingly raw riff that instantly allows you to get into the song. The lyrics talk about drugs taking over the mind though is often mistaken to be a story of slavery or something along those lines but either way they really show how creative the band has become because this 8 minute long song is full of melodies, different verses and tonnes of solos. Master of Puppets is often considered Metallica?s ...
Advantages: Flawless Heavy Metal record, technically stunning time signature shifts with occasional classical structuring Disadvantages: 20 year old production job, could do with a re-mastering
Time for my ultimate review of what I feel is the finest metal record of all time, 'Master of Puppets' by the masters themselves, 'Metallica'.
Myself, a fan of Heavy Metal entirely because of the music from these guys. It was the 'Black' album that started it all for me in the early 90's upon hearing 'Enter Sandman' on the radio; I was pulled out of my stupid Pop childhood, and taken away into a darker musical place I liked very much. I immediately purchased a copy of the 'Black' album and upon hearing this I read more into the band learning of their thrash roots and much more diverse heavier past. So I sought after their older material beginning with 'Master of Puppet's'. Which brings me to today, where I have quite a collection of 'Metallica's' music having trawled CD fairs for the rarities and odds and sods to build that collection ...
Master Of Puppets was the first classic album that Metallica produced and unfortunately the last with the late Cliff Burton. It opens with a deceptive gentle acoustic intro to the stomping track, Battery. Touches like that throughout the album show that even at this stage Metallica was more than just a thrash band (A tag that upset drummer Lars Ulrich at the time). The skill that went into the arrangement on the title track is breathtaking while the intros to The Thing That Should Not Be and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) are bone chilling in execution. Disposable Heroes is an attack on sending young men out to die, not forgetting that the cold war was in full swing at the time this album was written. Orion is an epic instrumental track that shows Metallica have always had a gift for writing good tunes. Overall a must have album for fans ...

Album Notes
MASTER OF PUPPETS was Metallica's last album with bass player Cliff Burton. Burton was killed in a traffic accident. He was replaced by Jason Newsted. Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark from September through December, 1985. Metallica's irresistible rise to the top continued with this enigmatic 1986 album. A constant touring unit by this point, their combination of light and dark and their deft staccato delivery, especially on the title track, came brusquely through. Their ever-lengthening arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes), bolstered by the precise snap of Hetfield's vocals, testified to their undeniable power. The striding "Battery," the darkly lit "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," as well as the complex instrumental, "Orion," all gave powerful testament to their ever-developing skill and vision.
