Possibly my favourite album to date <save for s&m>, "master" manages to showcase pretty much all the things that (in my humble opinion)make metallica a beast of a band. Fans of the heavier side of things will love songs like "battery" and "the thing that should not be", and - marvellous - these songs actually contain a powerful and dramatic instrumental backdrop. "sanitarium" begins with a weighty, brooding piece of resonant guitar plucking, whereas battery begins with what appears to be a classical overture, building into a hard rock crescendo. It is easy to see where the band got the raw material and perhaps inspiration for their recent S&M album, a 2 hour monster in which they collaborate with a *full* symphony orchestra to re-render erarlier classics (many featured on the blinding first half of master of puppets), into an incredibly hard hitting live barrage of sound. "master of puppets" presents the creative use of raw vocal and electric power to supplement a beautiful underlying tune, and is an album which I would urge even the most die hard metallicaphobe to at least listen to.
