Master of Puppets was the first metallica album I ever bought.... the title song of which was the first song by the band I’d ever heard... and as I was walking through my mums local branch of Woolworth’s one day... there it was... caked in dust, seemingly having been there for years amongst the other CD's... waiting to be noticed, bought, taken home, and appreciated, 'Metallica - Master Of Puppets' I didn’t care that the case had a crack in it... I didn’t care that it was ridiculously over priced... I had to have it... when I left Woolworth’s I went straight to my mum’s house... and listened to the album all day....
It is a toss up between this & Ride The Lightning as my favourite Metallica Album... there is just so many good things going for them both... but this is a review for puppets... so lets stay on the subject... *lol*
The album starts in a slow rather melancholy way with the intro to the song 'Battery'... but thus quickly shifts in to one of the thrashiest songs Metallica have ever done
It then shifts into the eight and a half minuet epic that is the albums title song, master of puppets, which deals with the relationship, and power that a drug dealer has over his 'customers'... and includes one of the nicest guitar solos eeeeeever, play by, surprisingly enough James!! The into one of the most elaborate solo's ever played by the more talented... but not quite as cool... Kirk Hammett...
The next song on the album, entitled 'The Thing That Should Not Be' is probably my favourite metallica song of all time... it's just indescribable... kind of a mad twisted demented song.... yet very cool... and containing one of the weirdest solos ever... rumours are that Kirk made it up on the spot... when you hear the solo you'll understand why... for lack of a better phrase... it's just fucked up!
Onto probably my second favourite song, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is quite a slow song, but yet still heavy enough to be in keeping with the rest of the album...
Then onto disposable heroes... which is another rather thrashy song... yet with the lyrics being at a slower pace than the guitar playing... it has a slowing effect on the whole song... making it sound not as heavy as the likes of Battery
Leper Messiah... the mosh pit song on the album... probably the one song on the album that'd make you want to get up and bang that head *lol*
Orion... the last instrumental ever on a metallica album... which probably had a lot to do with the death of bassist cliff Burton who seemed to be the one who pushed for the inclusion of instrumentals on the other albums... a very nice piece... which breaks the album up nicely... and kind of slows things down a little, although not as good as the instrumental 'The Call Of The Katulu' on the previous album, Orion is still a very nice piece of music
Damage Inc... probably the weakest song on the album is another thrashy affair, with equal if not as much power as battery... but just for some unplaceable reason... not as good...
all in all an amazing album... even thought James still has his youthful voice it's not as annoying thanks to the much improved studio work...
I think Cliff Burton would have been proud of his Swan-song album... it's just a pity he's not around to see metallica being as big as they are now...

This is a really good op, I just think you need to run a spellcheck - hope you don't think I'm being rude, but there are a few typos in here that it'd pick up. Let me know if you do and I'll gladly up my rating.

Advantages: Flawless Heavy Metal record, technically stunning time signature shifts with occasional classical structuring Disadvantages: 20 year old production job, could do with a re-mastering
