Metallica are one of the single best bands in the history of this business we call music. They were to be honest and not to put a fine a point on it musical pioneers. Metallica have a pretty unique sound which is easily recognizable. Metallica have produced in Master of Puppets and absolute classic of an album, ranking up there with their other greats, 'The black album' instantly springs to mind as a comparison. Metallica have made some excellent musical advances on this album. Not only is it an excellent musical album it is excellently written and the songs contain some subtle and concise social commentary, e.g. 'Disposable heroes'.
To listen to Metallica is to get an insight into the tormented musical genius of James Hetfield. Songs like 'Master of puppets' and 'Sanitarium' are obvious cries for help, and if it wasn't music I would have the boy committed, but as it is it is excellent and profound lyrics. Even just turn off the music open the inlay and read it, it is like reading an inspirational and misunderstood poet,
'Messenger of fear in sight, Dark deception kills the light, Hybrid children watch the sea, Pray for father, roaming free’
As an example as if further were needed as a testimony to the man who has made Metallica. Add to that the beautiful and thought provoking cover which depicts 2 great hands moving a series of generic American war tombstones with strings like a puppet, linking the two best songs on the album ‘Master of Puppets’ and ‘Disposable heroes’. Master of puppets is the genius of Metallica at it’s best with an opening from ‘Battery’ and building to the sublime ‘Orion’ instrumental through, ‘The thing that should not be’ ‘Leper Messiah’ and ‘Master of puppets’. Pure genius. Ecilpised only by 'The Black Album' and 'Re-load'.
"It is well known that music hit it’s pinnacle in the 1980’s" and this proves it. Metallica the lords of guitar and drum based bands prove to the word why poetry and heavy rock mix so well. The fathers of a generation of rebellion and social outcasting, Cliff Burton, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield. Well if loving Metallica makes you on the fringes of 1980’s society and if the very mention of their name is taboo then the world doesn’t know good music and you can quote me on that.

Advantages: The album shows Metallica at its peak as a band Disadvantages: Only 8 tracks, considered a short album by many, Sound quality could be better.
Advantages: Flawless Heavy Metal record, technically stunning time signature shifts with occasional classical structuring Disadvantages: 20 year old production job, could do with a re-mastering
