-=A little about=-
Master of Puppets (1986), a Metallica album, which has produced some of the most powerful Metallica riffs and all with Ex-bass player Cliff Burton. With James Hetfield introducing those fast and powerful riffs and Kirk Hammett on the lead with maybe a little more thought in his solos than Kill `em All the earlier album, this album is a must buy. Hetfields voice is not as harsh as earlier albums either delivering a good vocal line. The album itself is produced by Metallica and Flemming Ramussen.

-=Some Track info=-
Battery
The song starts with nice, slow 75 BPM, acoustic chords. All of a sudden the electric guitars come in with a heavy thrashing riff. Hetfield comes in to deliver some lyrics while thrashing out a heavy riff. Between verses comes
a lead break by Hammett it’s quite a fast riff which fits nicely into the song. Just before the main solo the song almost stops its progression and has a Half-Time feel where the main riff is stopped, then Hammett bursts into a blistering solo. The song then returns to its heavy riff for a verse or two, then suddenly ends.
Master Of Puppets
A song about the drugs, and their effects on people. A classic song holding some classic riffs. The song starts with a blast. Then Hetfield bursts into a riff that every Metallica fan will know all to well. The verse riff thrashes heavily on the open E on the guitars at around 220BPM.Just before the verse Hetfields lyrics read ‘MASTER! MASTER!’ The Amazing thing about this song is half way through, its completely changes rhythm and temp, both Hetfield and Hammett come in together to play one of the most harmonic, united guitar riffs ever heard. Next a melodic solo goes into play, nothing fast or fancy just something that has emotion. Now the song starts to return to its previous temp, and Hammett is raring to go, he blisters out a solo while Hetfield returns to the rhythm. The song ends on an evil laugh.
The Thing That Should Not Be
The song starts on a simple riff, undistorted and clean, then the distortion kicks in and the riff is played again with different variations. The song is quite slow too the previous ones but still contains that heavy Metallica like riffs. The solo Hammett provides in this song is quite freaky.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
The song is about patients in an institute for the mentally ill; they are not treated right and so sing
‘Sanitarium, Leave me be! Sanitarium, Just leave me alone’
The song starts with no distortion and some harmonics. It has an altogether eerie feel to it along with the riffs. Hetfields voice is much improved on this track. Opening with a slow eerie solo. The Chorus brings in the distortion. The middle of the song changes the tempo to the song with Hetfield and Hammett thrashing away at the guitars. Hammett then continues to solo noting too flashy, just fits the song nicely. Then the end solo comes again nothing too flashy or fast just right too fit the song.
Disposable Heroes
The song at 172 BPM starts with both the guitars and drums hitting away at chords. It stops…Hetfield hits out a Palm Muted riff on the Open E, the song he raises the riff and BPM to 188, and then stops for the verse. The song continues thrashy and fast,The lyrics read
‘Barking of Machinegun fire, does nothing to me now Sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow, More a man, more stripes you bare, glory seeker trends Bodies fill the fields I see, the slaughter never ends’
The song again has a half time feel where the Temp changes and Hammett comes in with a fast flashy solo.
Leper Messiah
The sound starts with a heavy de-sending riff. The song is very riffy indeed and reminds me of Ride The Lighting. The song itself is very chunky. It again goes to a half time feel, and then both guitars kick out a riff at 184 travelling up the fret board, before Hammett breaks into a solo. The song then returns to its original riff, then suddenly ends.
Orion
Orion is a 8 minute instrumental wonder, it has a industrial rocky feel, the guitar riffs are crunchier than heavy here. The solos and the lead work in this song are very melodic to say the least. The mid of the song changes temp again, the bass line comes in, slow melodic. Then a guitar sounding melodic slow, as if drunk. Then guitars and bass continue complementing each other for quite some time. Then Hammetts turn for the lead, a slow solo just enough to keep you listening, Hammett then returns to a faster solo. The song returns to its original riff and fades out.
Damage, Inc
The last song on the album, and maybe the worst, starts off slow, and sounds weird. Then Hetfield and the drums come in to mimic a marching pattern, then give the song a fast thrashy feeling. Hammetts belts out a fast blistering solo nothing special. Not one of the best songs.
-=Conclusion=
This album boasts both, heaviness and originality. The guitarists work well together creating lots of melodic and emotional pieces. A work of art.

Advantages: Flawless Heavy Metal record, technically stunning time signature shifts with occasional classical structuring Disadvantages: 20 year old production job, could do with a re-mastering
