This album was the third album metallica released and is considered to be the record that really "put metallica on the map" as one of americas best metal band.
Master was my first metallica album and the one that got me addicted. From then on metallica pulled my strings (mind the cheesy pun:D). Before i got this album i wasnt a fan of thrash metal but this album really kicked me in the ass and showed me that theres more than Linkin Park and Slipknot out there to listen to.
The first track Battery is one of metallica's fastest and aggressive songs and is still a key part of the bands live set almost 20 years on! It begins with a melodic Spanish Guitar intro, which is if im not mistaken the first time metallica used acoustic guitars on a record and then launches into what is now known as one of metals most famous riffs. The song goes half time in the middle before launching into a mental solo from Kirk "the ripper" Hammet.
The next track (and the title track) master of puppets is one of the most famous metallica songs ever, the opening duh.....duh duh duh" is probably one of the most recognised riffs today and this song has been played live nearly every night since. The song can be read on 2 levels, either from a drug addicts point of view and how the drug has become its "master" or as an anti-war song about how governments are leading soldiers to their deaths (hence the cover art).
The next track The Thing That Should Not Be is based on the H.P Lovecraft book "Shadow over Innsmouth" and has a person who has read the novel the song is a great portrayal of it. this song is not fast but is probably one of metallicas heaviest ever. You cant help but bang your head to this one.
The next track Welcome Home (sanitarium) like master of puppets can be read on two levels, the song can be from the point of view of an asylum patient or the sanitarium can be a metaphor for the government or the system either way this song is aggressive and emotional and is still played regularly today.
The next track Disposable Heroes is an all out anti-war song, extremely fast, extremely heavy, extremely thrashy and generaly bloody amazing. Unfortunately this song is rarely played live which is a shame because it would compliment a metallica set list very well.
The next track Leper Messiah is about people using religion as a front to make money out of honest people and has some of the best lyrics on the album.
The next track is an eight minute instrumental which even to this day has never been played live in its full length. The song is often associated with the late Cliff Burton (R.I.P) the ex bassist who died in a tragic bus accident in 1986. The song was played at his funeral.
And last but by absolutely no means least probably the thrashiest most aggressive song on the album, in my opinion outclassing the opening track Battery. Damage Inc really sends the album out with a bang and is extremely aggressive, up to the standards of the bands latest St Anger. ( I know Im probably going to get bad comments for comparing St Anger and Damage Inc but hey its my opinion)
This album is one of metals classics and i would recommend it to absolutely any fan of any type of rock or metal.
I would say that the only downsides to this album is the cover art which i think could be more detailed, the sound quality and the length.
