Black Sabbath's first two releases, Black Sabbath and Paranoid, were more than ... more
groundbreaking, they were earth-shattering, exposing the public to a brutal new form of noise pollution termed heavy metal. But it was the band's third album, Master of Reality, that cemented the group as blackened wizards of doom and gloom. Just listen to the echoing cough and sludgy guitar riff of the opening track "Sweet Leaf" and compare it to anything that existed at the time. Not only were Black Sabbath heavier than Deep Purple or Vanilla Fudge, they were also more experimental and controversial, exploring themes of darkness, drugs, and depravity that others dared not address. The heaviest and most influential disc of Black Sabbath's career, Master of Reality featured proto-metal sludge like "Children of the Grave" and "After Forever," which served as a blueprint for a legion of musicians including '90s Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Smashing Pumpkins. --Jon Wiederhorn

Building on the immense success of Paranoid was not going to be easy for Black Sabbath, but now they were a band in their prime, and could take on the world. They had gained a new, unwanted fan base in the screaming kids who revelled in the hit single Paranoid, and the image these kids sported did not suit the band at all. And so with the release of Master of Reality, it seems as if they used this album to repel these new followers, and redeem themselves to their original fans by releasing their heaviest material to date. Advantages: Superb album all round, with Sweet Leaf on it. Disadvantages: Um...it's another album which you HAVE to shell out on.
Masters of Reality is considered by some to Black Sabbath’s finest album, and it’s a damn fine piece of music even if I, a certified Sabbath nut, do say so. This really saw Black Sabbath breaking away from their blues roots and travelling down the heavier, more evil path that the dark nature of the music seemed to demand. Also, the increasing drug consumption of the band started to show on the more, unusual and experimental tracks which ... ...evident on the majority of the tracks, but this doesn’t detract from the excellent nature of the music. All of the vital ingredients remain in place – Tony Iommi’s gut wrenching tombstone guitar tone is still more than evident on tracks like Children of the Grave, as is his talent in writing some of the greatest riffs ever to blast forth from a stereo. The softening of the drum sound on tracks like After Forever adds a new level ...

responsible for the actions of his listeners. In 1988 he spoke his famous words: "sobriety fucking sucks." Stopping with touring in 1995, but soon ( also in 1995 ) he decided to go on, with a tour called 'Retirement sucks' Under influence of alchohol and drugs way to much, he could not control himself anymore.

and from that point forwards they produced album after album of pure heavy metal - rifftastically amazingly speaker breaking excellence. A band which most modern heavy/death/doom metal bands regard as an inspiration.
In the beginning there was Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Geezer Butler (real name Terence, I feel Geezer was a wise name change, bass), Tony Iommi (he of lack of finger tips, lead guitar) and Bill Ward (drums, vocals on It's Alright from the Technical Ecstasy album) Various randoms including Rick Wakeman (!) guested on keyboards. They produced 6 classic albums (BlackSabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage) followed by a greatest hits album (We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N' Roll) before 2 slightly more mediocre albums (Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die).

Album Notes
While other frontrunners of hard rock/metal like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple began dabbling in other musical forms (folk and string symphonies, respectively), Black Sabbath stuck close to its original direction and was rewarded with several of the most enduring rock releases of all time. Coming off the worldwide breakthrough of the band's 1971's landmark, PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY (released the same year) proved to be Sabbath's third classic in a row. Like all Sabbath albums of the era, not a second of filler is present--even the lesser-known material is superb. The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential as PARANOID, MASTER OF REALITY remains one of heavy metal's founding gems.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (1/20/00, p.59) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...the definitive studio relic of Sabbath's golden-hellfire era (1970-74)...Ozzy preached a gospel of light: dignity, redemption and, in the heaving stoner's hymn 'Sweet Leaf,' peace through weed..." Q (7/01, p.86) - Included in Q's "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time" - "...Malevolent....casting Black Sabbath as a Titanic-style house band on the eve of Armageddon, cranking it as the bomb drops..." Q (1/01, p.122) - 5 out of 5 stars - "...The most cohesive record of [their] first 3 albums..." The Guardian - "...untouchable stuff: more aggressive than the MC5, less stodgy than Zeppelin"
