Okay, I know, Oasis are over, they're yesterday's band, they've been replaced by newer bands (such as Hear'Say who've used the rifts from All Around the World for their first single), but in my opinion, this CD still contains some of the best Indie tracks in existance. They're almost all good enough to be A sides, and they're certainly better than some of the filler on the albums.
Track listing: 1. Acquiesce (4:24): Terrific start to the album with Noel and Liam both singing together on a song that can only be described as an anthem. If you liked "Go Let it Out", you'll love this. 2. Underneath The Sky (3:21): Solid track, good instrumentals. For some reason, even though it's the shortest track on the CD it drags on more than any of the others. 3. Talk Tonight (4:21): A track showing the tender side of Oasis's music. Very good lyrics describing Noel's time in the emotional wilderness while they were on tour in America. 4. Going Nowhere (4:39): A solid track, but slightly bland lyrics. Good instrumentals, but rather slow. 5. Fade Away (4:13): One of the oldest tracks on the album, and you can hear its age in its similarities to the tracks on the Definitely Maybe album. 6. The Swamp Song (4:19): This is the instrumental that featured on the What's the Story album. The album had it in two short pieces, each about a minute long, but this has a much longer version, featuring Paul Weller. It's far, far better than the version on the album, though the ending does go on a bit. 7. I Am The Walrus (6:25): Originally written but (I believe) never recorded by the Beatles. The lyrics are fantastically trippy, and the tune sounds good too. 8. Listen up (6:21): Another slow song. It's a very long one, and it's almost ballad like. It's probably my least favorite track on the album. 9. Rockin' Chair (4:35): One of Oasis's brilliant sounding epic songs. If you liked songs like "Sunday Morning Call" and "All Around the World", you'll like this. 10. Half The World Away (4:21): If you've ever seen The Royle Family, you'll recognise it as the theme music. One of the best tracks on the album. 11. It's Good To Be Free (4:18): If I remember correctly, this came after Half the World Away on the "Whatever" single. The three songs go together very well, and if you liked the other two, you'll like this. 12. Stay Young (5:05): Picks up the pace again, and brings in the nosy guitars. Good track, but reasonably bland. 13. Headshrinker (4:38): Far more in your face than anything else on the album with a rock/metal kind of sound. Very good track, though it does stand out a bit too much. 14. The Masterplan (5:22): Exceptionally good track; my favorite Oasis track of all time. Why it is that this wasn't released as a single, I will never know. Interesting lyrics, varied and skillfull instrumentals.
As you may have gathered, I love this album. If you don't have anything by Oasis, but you quite like them, this is certainly the album you should get. It's got a good variety of different sounds from the first 5 years or so of Oasis.
If you've got some Oasis albums and like them, this is worth getting. It is not in any way a poor cousin to the A sides and album tracks, and you'll probably find yourself returning to it far more than the "real" albums.
If you've got a lot of the singles, then you'll obviously have most of these tracks. Even so, if you really like these tracks but find that you never put the singles on just to hear 4 tracks (or 3 on the newer singles...), then this is still worth buying if you can find it cheaply somewhere.
