A Matter of Life and Death is Iron Maiden's fourteenth studio album, in a career that has ... more
spanned three decades. And yet, after all this time, Iron Maiden continue to improve, whilst most of their peers flounder. Simply put, A Matter of Life and Death is more than just a great Iron Maiden album; it's a great metal album. It revisits a theme that's familiar territory for the band, and rather boldly, devotes an entire album to it. A Matter of Life and Death is a concept album about war, and the closest thing to a prog album that the London-based metallers have yet created. And, at their age and at this point in their career, it's a step that just makes sense, adding a level of seriousness and dignity to a band that could have easily disappeared into Spinal Tap-style silliness. Instead, the six members of Iron Maiden sound rejuvenated, playing better than ever on tracks like "These Colours Don't Run", which starts out like an army recruiting anthem before revealing it's true nature as an anti-war song, and the nine-minute plus epics "For the Greater Good of God" and "The Legacy". Iron Maiden have enjoyed a creative rennaissance in recent years, but it's hard to imagine how they'll improve upon A Matter of Life and Death. --Ted Kord

Advantages: a great metal album showing maiden still have it Disadvantages: no song really stands out above the rest as a master piece
...what British metal is, a matter of life an death would be a good. It makes a change from the alternative music wich wont be rememeber that is around today and shows that maiden are still the top dog in the indiustry.
Lyrically this album is fantastic and it is well worth reading the lyrics without the music as well as singing along.

Compared to the last couple of maiden albums this album is completly different. It has a lot harder vibe and is more like their older albums. For me there isn't any particular song that stands out from the rest and its not as good as some of their other albums, but still it is a brilliant metal album and go's back to their earlier sound. Bruce's vocals are still top notch and keep getting better and you can feel the energy the guys put into making it.
Iron Maiden is a 6 piece metal band from the UK. Forming on christmas day in 1975 released their first album which was self titled in 1980 after many up's and downs and many differnet band memebers. Since then they have conquered the world of rock and metal with multiple studio albums, live albums and greatests hits. The legendary frontman, Bruce Dickinson joined the band in 1981 after the orginal frontman Paul Di'Anno was fired, propelling the band to new hieghts. By the mid 80's they were the biggest metal band around and 30 years on from there original beginings they are still producing brilliant music and enthrauling fans across the world. Iron maiden have headlined nearly all the major metal festivals in the world and have sold more than 100,000,000 albums worldwide.
There music is generally fasted passed rock mixing 2 guitars and since 2000 3 guitars into interchanging rythms solos and sounds. The drums are fast paced and the base is heavy. The vocals tend to be extremly powerful, something that really stands out on this album. Often they like to start of with a more acoustic sound and build a song up. A good exam on this album would be The Legacy. A 9 minute track starting acousticly building up throughout to a breath taking solo.
Musicaly it doesn't dissappoint. The tracks have the classic madien feel and roll into each other with ease. The solo's once again are top notch and keep the fast pase feel to the album. Even the slower tracks still manage to find a hard rock edge. For an example of what British metal is, a matter of life an death would be a good. It makes a change from the alternative music wich wont be rememeber that is around today and shows that maiden are still the top dog in the indiustry.
Lyrically this album is fantastic and it is well worth reading the lyrics without the music as well as singing along.
Overall its not the best maiden album but it is a brilliant metal album and it is worth buying. You will listen to it a lot and the more you listen to it the more you will enjoy it.
Advantages: Epic songs leave you feeling satisfied, album is everything it needs to be. Disadvantages: Noise can in some points be a little distored in the heavy parts.
Yet another fabulous album by Maiden. This album has lots of epic songs in it, These Colours Dont Run and Brighter Than A Thousand Suns are my perticular favorites, about 7 minutes long and 9 minutes long respectively. In a lot of the song on this album Maiden go for a unison sound, and having 5 legendary rockers going staccarto just sounds awesome. This album is deffinately going to appear anyone liking Machine Heads latest album The Blackening ... ...out some real belters that are just the right length to scream out yourself, you arent left ghasping for air and still thinking "how the hell can he still be holding that note!?". Different World has to be my recommendation if your in a mood to get blown away by some killer vocals. Having the three guitarist means they've really been able to get the noise high for this one, they can get that harsh stand but still and in the legendary solos...even ...

Advantages: Amazing musicianship, good for all moods Disadvantages: Maybe a bit on the dark side
Iron Maiden's latest installment to their long catalogue turns out to be one of their most powerful recordings yet. The album, number 3 since Bruce Dickinson returned to the band, see's them delve into war torn imagery and the experiences of conflict. Personally, I think the album reminds me a lot of "The X-Factor" but a lot faster paced. The opening song, "Different World" is the usual 3 mintue kick in the teeth you can expect from the metal giants, ... ...drawn out and change tempo and rhythm numerous times. I think the work of the 3 guitarists on this album is impeccable and Bruce's vocals seem to get better with age, however I think it is the drums and bass that really carry the album. This can be heard at the start of "The Longest Day" and especially "for the greater good of god" (which is my favourite track). The album has recieved good reviews from all the major magazines, including Q and Kerrang, ...

Advantages: genius / kicks ass / topical lyrics / Eddie :-) Disadvantages: You have to listen to the whole thing a few times to really love it!
...At 72 minutes, A Matter of Life and Death is the band's longest album to date and its average song length (7:12 per track) also makes it the longest Iron Maiden album by song average. The album is their most progressive approach taken since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, with lengthy instrumental sections and numerous time changes.

Original 'a matter of life and death' covers new ground and progresses maiden to their seats in rock history as one of the greatest. Advantages: Good Solos, rifts and instrumental play, Well thought lyrics Disadvantages: Takes a while to get in to
Naturally as a maiden fan, when i heard there was a new album coming out i was counting down the days until it was released. When i first listened to it what struck me most was the different vibe they gave out from the songs. Most of their previous music was reasonably light hearted compared to this and so with any change of style in a band this got some getting used to. But, once i listened to the album a couple more times i really started to enjoy ... ...Iron Maiden have delivered fantastic rifts, well thought lyrics and of course amazing solos that'll have any budding young guitarist longing to play along to. Most bands tend to die out after just a few years but even after over 27years they are still at their best and have reinforced that they aren't done yet. Finally i must say that the artwork on the case and on the CD is yet again, as we've come to expect from Iron Maiden fantasic. All in all ...

Advantages: Consistency of the songs, production, lyrics Disadvantages: None
...of the songs on A Matter Of Life And Death start off with slow long intros, with clean moody guitar riffs, then lead into powerful distorted melodies, except for the opening track Different World and The Pilgrim which start off like classic Maiden tracks. The blend of new and old makes a perfect album, the long tracks require a few listens before you can appreciate them, but once you do they become timeless songs you can listen to again and again. ... ...album to date, close to Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son and Brave New World. The most unique song of the album is The Legacy, which is over 9 minutes long with an amazing 3 minute long acoustic intro which creates an eerie dark atmosphere before the excellent hard guitar riffs start. Bruce Dickinsons vocals are better than ever, which is very impressive considering his age. Overall this is an excellent album and i recommend it to any metal or Iron maiden ...
